Alexander Melentjew (1980)

Alexander Melentyev ( Russian Александр Реммович Мелентьев , English Aleksandr Melentyev * 27. June 1954 in Penza , Russian SFSR , USSR ; † 16th February 2015 in Bishkek , Kyrgyzstan ) was a Soviet sports shooter . He was the world record holder in his free pistol discipline .

Alexander Melentjew was the first Olympic champion of the Moscow Games in 1980 and was also the first resident of Kyrgyzstan to become Olympic champion. He was a non-commissioned officer with the border troops of the USSR in Alma-Ata, Kazakhstan . Melentjew was only accepted into the Soviet national team a year before the Olympic Games, where he immediately became Soviet champion and also winner of the People's Spartakiad with excellent 576 rings. This made him a favorite for the Olympic Games. In Moscow he withstood the pressure of expectation and was able to win the gold medal with a world record of 581 rings ahead of Harald Vollmar from the GDR with 568 rings. Melentiev's sports equipment was an MC55-1 free pistol .

After the triumph of Moscow , things calmed down around Melentyev. Due to the boycott of the Eastern Bloc countries, he was unable to participate in the 1984 Los Angeles Games . In Seoul in 1988 he was part of the Soviet team again, but only achieved 12th place with a disappointing 558 rings.

Melentyev was no longer able to come anywhere near his own world record. Curiously, Harald Vollmar , who finished second in the Olympics, set the current German record as early as 1979 with the same result, which, however, was not a world record because it was not achieved at a World Cup or the Olympic Games.

His brother Juri (* 1964) also took part in the 1996 and 2000 Olympic Games for Kyrgyzstan as a marksman.
