Paul van Asbroeck (born May 1, 1874 in Schaarbeek , † 1959 ) was a Belgian sports shooter .
successes
Paul van Asbroeck took part in five Olympic Games . In 1900 in Paris he won the bronze medal behind Emil Kellenberger and Anders Peter Nielsen in a three-position battle with the army rifle . In the kneeling and standing position, he just missed another medal win as fourth. He was only missing one point in the standing position for the bronze medal. At the Olympic Games in London in 1908 he was Olympic champion in the individual competition with the free pistol and also secured the silver medal in the team competition with Réginald Storms , Charles Paumier du Verger and René Englebert . With 1863 points, the Belgians held their ground against the British team, while the US team won the competition. Van Asbroeck was the team's best shooter with 493 points. 1920 he stayed in Antwerp , despite participation in ten competitions as well without medal win as 1924 in Paris and 1936 in Berlin .
At world championships between 1900 and 1930 van Asbroeck won a total of 35 medals, 17 with the rifle and 18 with the pistol . He won 14 of his 15 world titles with the free pistol, eight of them in singles and six with the team. He was also world champion with the free rifle in Brussels in 1905 in a standing position. In addition to his 15 gold medals, he won eight silver and twelve bronze medals.
