Ralf Schumann (born June 10, 1962 in Meißen ) is a German marksman who was particularly successful with the rapid-fire pistol .

Career

Schumann first came into contact with sport shooting in 1976 when he tried his hand at shooting as a rifle in a school sports community. But due to his small size, his trainer did not consider him suitable, whereupon Schumann switched to weightlifting . But Schumann could not prevail there either, so that he returned to shooting sports that same year. In contrast to the rifle , however, he showed some talent in handling the air pistol , whereupon he was delegated to a training center in March 1977. Under his coach at the time, Petra Linkiewitz , Schumann soon made further progress, so that he was able to win the GDR championships in his age group the following year. After further successes in the youth field (including Spartakiadesieger 1981) Schumann was accepted into the club for sport shooting of the GST Leipzig in 1982 and was from this point a member of the GDR national team. Schumann has been working with national coach Peter Kraneis since 1982 . In order to receive optimal support in the GDR , he had to join the SED .

At the 31st GDR championships in 1985, Ralf Schumann won his first individual men's titles in the disciplines of air pistol 40 shots, 10 m and small bore rapid fire pistol 60 shots (30 + 30), 25 m with 598 rings. In the latter discipline he soon found himself without serious competition in his own country and was able to win the national championship title three more times in the following years (1986, 1988, 1989). Schumann also celebrated great success internationally in his parade discipline, which has been part of the Olympic program since the beginning of the modern Olympic Games in 1896. With three Olympic victories ( 1992 , 1996 , 2004 ) he is the most successful German Olympic athlete in shooting sports. In addition, he took silver twice ( 1988 , 2008 ) and was fifth once ( 2000 ). At the 2012 Summer Games in London the now 50-year-old Schumann was unable to repeat earlier successes and was ranked 16th Another possible medal was denied Schumann, when he in the course of the boycott of the Eastern Bloc countries not at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles to participate could even though he was already qualified. Schumann took part in seven Olympic Games from 1988 to 2012.

In 1990 and 1998 Schumann became world champion , in 2002 vice world champion and in 1986 and 1994 world championship third. He also won gold with the team in 1998 and 2002. At the European Championships between 1987 and 2003, Schumann won gold 13 times (7 times individual, 6 times team). Ralf Schumann, who competes for the development association SSZ Suhl , celebrated 39 World Cup victories in the course of his career and was able to win the overall World Cup 13 times. (As of December 2008).

After more than 700 competitions, Ralf Schumann ended his career with the World Cup finals in Bangkok on October 26th, 2012 and will dedicate himself to the coaching business in future.

Private

Ralf Schumann moved to Saarbrücken in 1991 . Two years later, the company moved to Stockheim (Lower Franconia) . He is second married to Anke Völker , a successful sports shooter, and has three children from his first marriage. Schumann is a trained motor vehicle fitter and precision mechanic and worked for some time in the grinding shop of a sawmill. He has been licensed as an A-trainer since 2006 and was employed as a junior trainer at the Thuringian Schützenbund at the shooting sports center Suhl-Friedberg , for which he gave up his job as a saw blade grinder. In addition to this activity, he is also a well-known tuner for bespoke pistol grips. He completed his training as a qualified trainer at the Cologne Trainer Academy . The part-time course lasted three years and ended successfully in October 2011 with the acquisition of the highest license level. He has been working as a freelance trainer since 2015. Ralf Schumann publicly acknowledged his Christian faith repeatedly. "Jesus lives" is written on the cap that he wore in competitions since 2005. His 2004 gold medal in Athens was "proof that God exists" for him.

Ralf Schumann is involved in an evangelical free church near Stuttgart and at times in the addiction aid association " Blue Cross ". On May 10, 2006, he signed a cooperation agreement with the Blue Cross in Suhl and described his voluntary activity with a parallel: "Shaky hands can be fatal not only for an addict. A restless hand is probably the worst thing for a sports shooter, too can happen." Schumann acts as a sponsor for the aid organization childrenHope , which supports street children in Latin America.
