Corneliu Ion (born June 27, 1951 in Focşani ) is a former Romanian sports shooter .

successes

Corneliu Ion, who was active for Steaua Bucharest , took part in four Olympic Games with the rapid-fire pistol . In 1976 in Montreal , he finished fifth. Four years later , like Jürgen Wiefel and Gerhard Petritsch, he achieved the highest score in Moscow with 596 points. In the jump-off, Ion and Wiefel got 148 points in the first round, while Petritsch was eliminated with 146 points and won the bronze medal. In the second round both hit 147 points, so a third round was necessary. In this Ion prevailed with 148 to 147 hits and became Olympic champion . At the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles , he finished second with 593 points behind Takeo Kamachi and in front of Rauno Bies , so that he received the silver medal. He finished the 1988 Games in Seoul in 18th place. At world championships in 1974 in Thun he won the silver medal in the individual competition with the air pistol and bronze with the team with the rapid-fire pistol. In 1982 in Caracas he was runner-up with the rapid-fire pistol team.

After his active career, he first became a coach at Steaua Bucharest. In 1990 he became president of the national shooting association and was also a member of the management of the Comitetul Olimpic și Sportiv Român . In 2001 he received the Officer's Cross of the Order of Merit .
