Robert Hertz (* 1881 in Saint-Cloud , Hauts-de-Seine department ; † April 13, 1915 in Marchéville-en-Woëvre , Meuse department ) was a French anthropologist and student of the French sociologists Émile Durkheim and Marcel Mauss . He worked for the journal L'Année Sociologique, founded by Durkheim, and specialized in the sociology of religions and folklore.

Hertz became known for his studies on the collective representation of death, the predominance of the right hand, and his unfinished doctoral thesis on sin and atonement. His last work is a study of the alpine cult of San Besso .

Some researchers, such as the historian of ideas François Dosse, consider Hertz to be the true father of Claude Lévi-Strauss' structuralism . His thinking influenced the members of the Collège de Sociologie , namely Georges Bataille , Michel Leiris and Roger Caillois , especially their acceptance of a bipolar, right and left sacral.
