Stephan Moebius

Stephan Moebius (born November 14, 1973 in Konstanz ) is a German sociologist and cultural scientist .

life and work

Stephan Moebius attended the humanistic Heinrich-Suso-Gymnasium in Konstanz until 1993 . After his community service, he studied sociology and cultural studies in Bremen . In 2002 he received his doctorate as Dr. phil. at the University of Bremen with the grade summa cum laude . From 2003 to 2008 he taught at the Institute of Sociology at the Albert Ludwig University in Freiburg and was a member of the “History of Social Sciences” editorial team of the “Sozial.Geschichte. Journal for Historical Analysis of the 20th and 21st Centuries ”. Moebius was a research fellow of the German Research Foundation (DFG) and carried out research at the Collège de Sociologie, founded in 1937 by Georges Bataille , Michel Leiris and Roger Caillois . With this thesis he completed his habilitation in 2005 at the University of Bremen. As part of a DFG project, he also examined the history of the impact of the French sociologist and ethnologist Marcel Mauss .

Stephan Moebius was chairman of the cultural sociology section in the German Society for Sociology (DGS) until 2015 and spokesman for the sociological theory section of the Austrian Society for Sociology (ÖGS) until 2017 . In 2007 he represented the chair for cultural anthropology , cultural sociology and ethnology at the University of Konstanz . From 2007 to 2009 he was junior professor for sociology at the Max-Weber-Kolleg for cultural and social science studies at the University of Erfurt and also taught at the political science faculty of the university, but in the meantime he represented the chair for general and theoretical sociology ( Hartmut Rosa ) at the University of Jena . Since September 2009 Moebius has been a university professor and holder of the chair for sociological theory and the history of ideas at the Karl-Franzens-Universität Graz . In 2017 he was elected a corresponding member and in 2019 a full member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences . In 2017 he received the State Prize for excellent research-related teaching from the Republic of Austria.
