Magid Magid , also Magid Mah , (born June 26, 1989 in Burao , Somalia ) is a British politician of the Green Party of England and Wales (GPEW). From May 2018 to May 2019 he was Lord Mayor of Sheffield . From July 2, 2019 to January 31, 2020, he was a member of the European Parliament of the European Green Party in the group The Greens / European Free Alliance .

Life

Magid Magid was born in 1989 in Burao, the capital of the Togdheer region in Somalia. After the outbreak of the Somali civil war , his mother and her six children fled Somalia in 1994. After spending six months in a refugee camp in Ethiopia , they came to Great Britain , where Magid grew up in Burngreave, a district of Sheffield, and attended Fir Vale Secondary School .

He then began studying marine biology at the University of Hull . During his studies his interest in politics grew due to the rise of the right-wing populist UK Independence Party (UKIP). He founded a mixed martial arts club at the university and was elected president of the student council. After graduating from university, he worked in the field of digital marketing, among other things.

In 2018, Magid took part in the reality show Hunted on Channel 4 TV . His trademark is a yellow baseball cap that he wears upside down.

In 2014 he joined the Green Party of England and Wales (GPEW) and in 2016 he was elected a member of Sheffield City Council for the Greens in the constituency of Broomhill and Sharrow Vale . In May 2018 he succeeded Anne Murphy as the 122nd Lord Mayor of Sheffield - a primarily ceremonial office that rotates annually among the major parties of Sheffield City Council. In this role he was the youngest and the first of the Greens. In May 2019, Tony Downing succeeded him as the 123rd Lord Mayor of Sheffield.

In 2019, his party nominated Magid for the 2019 European elections and was elected along with his six party colleagues. He joined the group The Greens / European Free Alliance. For the parliamentary group, he was a member of the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs , as well as a deputy member of the Committee on Culture and Education .

On his first day in the EU Parliament , he is said to have been asked to leave the building. According to a spokesman for parliament, the alleged incidents were being investigated, but he could safely say that no member of the parliamentary staff was involved. In his speech on July 17, 2019 on European refugee policy and humanitarian aid in the Mediterranean, Magid Magid described Italy's Interior Minister Matteo Salvini as a coward. After the speech, he was asked by the Vice President of Parliament Rainer Wieland to take off his baseball cap while speaking.
