Committee on Culture and Education

The Committee on Culture and Education ( CULT ) is a committee of the European Parliament . The committee chairman has been Sabine Verheyen ( CDU / EPP ) since July 2019 .

The committee is responsible for the cultural policy of the European Union , in particular the promotion of cultural and linguistic diversity, the preservation of cultural heritage and cultural exchange. The committee also deals with EU education policies, such as the European Higher Education Area , the European Schools and lifelong learning programs (such as the Erasmus program ). In addition, the Committee is responsible for information and media policy as well as for youth policy, leisure and sport and maintains the relations between the European Parliament and the international organizations dealing with culture and education.

Among the formations in the Council of the European Union , the Council for Education, Youth and Culture is the counterpart to the Culture Committee in Parliament . At the European Commission , the area is divided into several departments; Depending on the topic, the Commissioner for Education, Training and Culture , the Commissioner for Science and Research , the Commissioner for Multilingualism or the Commissioner for Information Society and Media is responsible.
