Guest room
As a guest room are in Germany , Austria and South Tyrol , the designated fee or commercially rented rooms. In Switzerland, however, the word is rarely used.
The rooms for accommodation of guests ranging from small single rooms in private houses double rooms (both now mostly with bath / WC) up to larger rooms with kitchen and walk-in closet . However , if there are more than two living rooms / bedrooms, one usually speaks of a holiday home or apartment . In European hotels , living areas of 30 to 50 m² for two people have largely become the standard.
Historical aspects
A new travel magazine writes about the word " guest room " : "The guest room has been threatened with extinction since words like guest house became fashionable. As if the traveler had to feel at home everywhere, as if he belonged to the family as soon as he climbed out of the intercity bus. ” Perhaps, “ for the stranger it is precisely the mixture of wanderlust and homesickness ... ”
In the 1950s , when the housing shortage was particularly great due to the displaced persons from the eastern regions, many guest rooms were occupied by the newcomers. In some popular vacation spots or areas - such as B. the Harz - as a result, traditional tourism as an economic sector got into difficulties.
The refugee quarters, which are still needed in certain areas today, are , however, mostly rented by the authorities in places where tourism has lost its importance. In some cases, this has led them to a status that was previously associated with “ emergency quarters ”.
It has only been common for private rooms to have their own small bathroom (now mostly with a shower ) for a few decades. Because around 1960 it was considered progressive in private quarters in some areas to be able to offer “rooms with running water” or even with hot water . It was by no means certain whether these structural investments would be worthwhile.
As a rule, those holiday regions have developed the most where attention was paid to these investments and infrastructure at an early stage . However, many are now suffering from the problems of mass tourism that was subsidized at the time . Therefore, in addition to a new special and active vacation, city and quality tourism, the trend towards naturalness - and generally towards " wellness " - can be seen again. At the same time, the average length of stay in the same place has decreased significantly because many people split their vacation into different seasons.
Monaco has one of the highest densities of guest rooms . According to a report by Die Zeit (Online 28/2005), 600 more will soon be added to the 2,200 accommodations.
The type of accommodations
Guest rooms are built and offered by private individuals and various tourism companies, among others

- For longer periods, however, accommodations such as the Kolping House or student dormitories are provided.
Private is for the holidays the opportunity of the last few years increasingly residential and House Exchange with acquaintances or advertisements utilized.
As a rule, the guests come (the word "stranger" has experienced a change in meaning)
- by appointment (inn, guesthouse, hotel, spa house, etc.),
- while for spontaneous guests the signs ("room free") or local information from the community (the former " room certificate ") are the most important sources of information.
- Naturally, the motels have a large proportion of overnight stays booked at short notice .
- In addition to the traditional methods, the Internet is nowadays becoming increasingly important for pre-registration and booking . This is why private and commercial providers are increasingly paying attention to the web presence and the quality of the websites .
Single / double room
A guest room is differentiated according to the number of people who can occupy it. One guest can stay overnight in a single room. Compared to a double room, the overnight stay in a single room is significantly more expensive, as the second full-paying guest is missing and the lost profit has to be compensated, but the effort for the hotelier is almost the same (e.g. cleaning effort). Often there are also no explicit single rooms and a (potential) double room with the appropriate space must be used. Some double rooms have two beds on a bed frame or two (single) beds standing together; in narrow spaces it can also be two bed frames in different areas of the guest room. Older guests often explicitly book a “twin-bedded room” and ask not to be assigned a “double room”. However: not all accommodation providers offer their guests the choice between double rooms and twin rooms.
A single room surcharge is often required, especially for group trips organized for business purposes. In practice, group tours are often booked by several individual travelers. For economic reasons, “half double rooms” are offered here, which corresponds to the merging of two single travelers in one double room. The tour operator does not require a single supplement in this case usually. Half a double room can also mean that a double room is only occupied by one person. This type of accommodation is particularly popular with comfort-oriented travelers and is usually offered as "single = double room" in the tourist tenders.
