Home Exchange (also home exchange or vacation home exchange - for the oldest providers - also known as "Home Link") describes the possibility of one's own home is limited to trade in time with a strange apartment. The home exchange is intended as an inexpensive alternative for travelers who want to travel individually and who are willing to let other people live in their own four walls. An exchange can take place at the same time or at different times. With the exchange, usually only the costs for travel and food are incurred. On March 29, 2017, the Stiftung Warentest compares home exchange portals in portrait. ARD and ZDF showed reports on the topic of "How can you go on vacation with little money?"

development

The idea of a temporary home swap originally came from the USA. In 1976, then US President Jimmy Carter and his wife Rosalyn exchanged the house on their peanut farm in Georgia with a Brazilian family in Recife . The possibility of finding accommodation abroad is becoming increasingly popular in German-speaking countries. Most of the participants report positive experiences.

File sharing networks

The home exchange is usually mediated by file sharing sites that are commercially active. The world's oldest provider is Homelink. The network now has branches in 28 countries. The program originally began as an exchange program for university lecturers in the 1930s and 1940s. A corresponding organization has existed in Germany since 1953. Most of the time, a fee is charged to place an ad and to get in touch with other prospective travelers. The annual fees are between 30 and 100 euros or up to 140 euros. In 2006, the largest providers reported just over 10,000 (Homelink, Intervac) or around 8,600 (Homeexchange) exchange offers per year.

Risks

The Stiftung Warentest recommends that all key data and the liability provisions just agreed and a personal liability insurance and a home insurance to complete. The home exchange organizations had model contracts ready, which would also be deposited there. In the comparison of the Stiftung Warentest, a special feature is mentioned: guarantee fund over 2500 € (included free of charge in the annual fee) and an exchange cancellation guarantee.
