Kronprinztunnel

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Kronprinztunnel (in Germany also known as Gallwitztunnel or Rabentunnel ) is a former German military tunnel in the gorge of Caurettes. It is located across from the Dead Man Hill, northwest of the city of Verdun in France . During the Battle of Verdun , the area was highly contested.

This one kilometer long underground shelter served as a refuge for the German forces during the Battle of the dead man (French .: Morthomme) 1917 at the First World War . The tunnel served the troops as a rest room and to care for the wounded.

The tunnel entrance and some ventilation shafts are still visible today in the Mort Homme forest. However, the tunnel dug into the clay soil is unstable and may no longer be entered for safety reasons.
