Richard Mark Johnson (born April 27, 1974 in Kurri Kurri , New South Wales ) is a former Australian football player . The midfielder has spent most of his career with English club Watford , most recently with Wellington Phoenix in New Zealand .

Club career

England

Johnson left Australia at the age of 16 to become a professional footballer in England. He went through the youth department of Watford FC and made his professional debut for the third division towards the end of the 1991/92 season. Johnson was not able to stay permanently in the regular team in the following years, only under Graham Taylor , who took over the team in 1997 and led to two promotions in a row, the Australian had a permanent regular place. Together with Micah Hyde , he formed the central midfield of the successful Watford team.

In the first division season 1999/2000 Johnson played only a minor role, two serious injuries in August and January forced him to each two months off. At the. On April 29, 2000, he seriously injured his knee in a game and was out for a year. Shortly after his return in late April 2001, the injury recurred and he missed the entire 2001/02 season. In the autumn of 2002 he returned to the game business and was loaned to Northampton Town for a short time in early 2003 to collect game practice. After his return, he was still used in the last games of the season, but then left the club in October 2003 as he could not be guaranteed regular appearances.

He initially joined Colchester United on a non-contract basis, but left the club again after a competitive game in the Football League Trophy and signed a short-term contract with Stoke City for three months. After the three months he moved to the Queens Park Rangers in February 2004 and helped the club to achieve promotion to the Football League Championship . The following season he played no role under Ian Holloway and was initially awarded for a month at the Milton Keynes Dons . Johnson returned to Australia at the end of the season.

A-League

He found there with the Newcastle United Jets a club in the newly formed A-League . Johnson was a regular player and finished the season in fourth place. In the following season he joined the New Zealand club New Zealand Knights in the A-League, the club finished last and was dissolved at the end of the season. For the following season he signed with the Knights successor Wellington Phoenix . In February 2009 he announced that he would end his professional career after his contract with Wellington expired due to persistent knee problems.

In May 2007, Johnson was sentenced to eight months in prison after he was drunk at the wheel of his car and did not stop despite being warned by a police patrol. During the subsequent alcohol check, the permitted limit of 0.8 per mille was exceeded by almost four times. The sentence was suspended after an appeal hearing in June.

National team

Johnson made his only international appearance for the Australian national team in a friendly against the Czech Republic in 2000 . Prior to that, he played in two friendly matches against the Brazilian Olympic team in 1999, but they do not count as official internationals.
