Stoner competed in the MotoGP class of the motorcycle world championship from 2006 to 2012 . In 2007 he became world champion in this class for the first time on a Ducati .
In 2011 he won the world title for the second time on a Honda. With 38 victories he is one of the most successful riders in the MotoGP class.
Career
Early years
Casey Stoner began his career in Europe in 2000 in the Spanish and British 125- cc championship. In 2001 he finished the eight-liter class in the British championship behind Leon Camier in second place. In 2001 he also made his debut in the 125 cc class of the motorcycle world championship on a Honda . In the following year he moved permanently to the world championship, where he competed in the 250 cc class with an Aprilia in Lucio Cecchinello's team . Stoner was twelfth overall this year with 68 points.
The 2003 season Stoner drove together with team boss Cecchinello, who was still active at the time, in the 125 cc class. At the Italian Grand Prix , the Australian won his first pole position and last race of the season, the Grand Prix of Valencia on the Ricardo Tormo circuit , he was even able to celebrate his first win. At the end of the season he finished eighth in the World Cup with 125 points.
In the next season, Stoner drove for KTM again in the 125 cc class, which he finished fifth in the overall standings with 145 points after one win, two second and three third places, and a pole position.
In 2005 he returned to Lucio Cecchinello's LCR team and competed in the 250 cm³ class on an Aprilia factory machine. Until the third last race, Stoner fought for the world title with the Spaniard Dani Pedrosa , but he fell at his home Grand Prix in Phillip Island of all places and was ultimately runner-up with five wins and a total of ten podium places.
MotoGP class
Due to the dominance of Valentino Rossi and Yamaha in the MotoGP class, Honda decided to increasingly rely on young racing drivers for the 2006 season and no longer offer new contracts to aging stars such as Max Biaggi , Alex Barros or Sete Gibernau . Since Sito Pons lost his sponsor Camel to the Yamaha factory team and could not find an equivalent replacement, he withdrew his team from the MotoGP class. This freed up motorcycles at Honda and Stoner's team boss Lucio Cecchinello decided to set up a MotoGP team for 2006 with Stoner. The start of the season was very promising for the Australian, at the second Grand Prix, the Grand Prix of Qatar in Losail , he achieved his first pole position and at the following race in Turkey he even came second in the race. After that, he was able to make it into the top 10 on a regular basis , but he often crashed in a promising position.
2007 season
For the 2007 season , Casey Stoner was long discussed at Yamaha as a possible teammate of Valentino Rossi, but in October 2006 he signed a contract with Ducati . The Italian team was urgently looking for a driver to replace Sete Gibernau , who had ended his career after failed contract negotiations. Those in charge later admitted that they had taken a great risk with Stoner's commitment, as it was not possible to assess what performance he should be capable of before the start of the season. Stoner himself emphasized that the chance of a factory machine was decisive for his decision. The Australian started the season furiously. At the opening race, the Grand Prix of Qatar, he was able to clinch a convincing victory mainly because of the superior top speed of his Ducati. After further victories in the races in Turkey and China , the competition predicted that the Ducati could only be victorious on slopes with long straights. After Casey Stoner defeated World Cup favorite and seven-time world champion Valentino Rossi at the Catalonia Grand Prix on the technically demanding slopes of Barcelona , he was counted among the serious title contenders. After further, partly superior victories in Great Britain , the USA , the Czech Republic and in San Marino , Casey Stoner secured the world championship title in the fourth last race, the Japanese Grand Prix in Motegi . At the end of the season he had ten wins and a total of 14 podiums. Stoner gave the small Bolognese factory Ducati the first world title in the history of the FIM motorcycle road world championship and is the first world champion in the premier class on a non-Japanese make since Phil Read 1974 .
2008-2010 season
In the 2008 season started with a victory in Qatar Stoner, after he had a period of weakness through which he in the overall number of points on Valentino Rossi and Dani Pedrosa lost. After his Ducati was equipped with new engine electronics, he regained strength in the middle of the season and celebrated three victories in a row, which greatly improved his starting position in the fight for the world title. After that, however, Stoner fell in three consecutive races while lying in a promising position and fell back in the title fight against Valentino Rossi.
At the last race of the 2009 season , Stoner crashed on the warm-up lap and was unable to take part in the race. While the Australian was still runner-up in 2008, the two following seasons ended in fourth place. Stoner struggled with motivation problems during the course at Ducati after some moderate results. His Ducati, which was specially designed to be driven, also contributed to the fact that he often drove over the limit in 2010 and crashed. At the end of the year, the Australian's contract with the Italians was not renewed, he moved to the Honda factory team Repsol-Honda , where he met the Spaniard Dani Pedrosa and the Italian Andrea Dovizioso .
2011 season
Even during the winter test drives, Stoner showed no problems converting to his new Honda. He was always one of the fastest and immediately won the first race of the season in Qatar. Up to the sixth round of the season in Great Britain, the Australian had four wins. In the course of the year, world champion Jorge Lorenzo turned out to be his toughest competitor, because his team-mate Pedrosa had bad luck with injuries and old master Valentino Rossi was on inferior equipment with the Ducati. Stoner was able to secure the world championship title at the 16th run, his home Grand Prix, on Phillip Island.
2012 season
The Australian started the 2012 season as world champion in the Repsol Honda team alongside Dani Pedrosa . From this year 1000 cc engines were again allowed in the MotoGP class, which is why he competed on a completely new Honda RC213V . After the first three races, Stoner already had two victories. A little later, on May 17th, he announced his retirement at the end of the season. After that, Jorge Lorenzo (Yamaha) turned out to be a more consistent rider. After Stoner crashed in training for the Indianapolis Grand Prix and was unable to contest three races, he had no chance of defending his title. On November 11, 2012, he contested his last race in the Motorcycle World Championship at the Valencia Grand Prix and finished in third place. He was also third in the overall standings.
After retiring, Casey Stoner was inducted into the MotoGP Hall of Fame .
2016 season
In November 2015 it was announced that Stoner was hired again by his then employer Ducati from 2016 . He will take on the role of test driver there.
2015 Suzuka 8-hour race
Together with the Japanese Takumi Takahashi and the Dutch Superbike World Championship rider Michael van der Mark , Stoner started the 8-hour race in Suzuka on July 26, 2015 . He fell while in the lead on the seventh lap and fractured his left tibia and right shoulder blade . The cause was a stuck throttle valve.
