- The number of rated runs was calculated with an even number of races held by halving this number and then adding one. In six races, four went into the championship ranking.
- If an odd number of races was held, the number of runs was added by one and then halved. In seven races, four were therefore counted.
useful information
- After three major manufacturers had withdrawn at the end of the preseason, the motorcycle world championship lost much of its tension and credibility. The factory machines used by MV Agusta were mostly unrivaled, especially in the large displacement classes.
- In order to increase the attractiveness of the races, the FIM forbade full fairings on the machines, which caused them to lose top speed.
- In 1958 the Swedish Grand Prix received World Cup status for the first time. Until then, this was the last of the classic pre-war Grands Prix that was not part of the world championship.
Deaths
- New Zealander John Antram was killed on May 26, 1958, on the first day of training for the Tourist Trophy.
- Des Wolff from Rhodesia died on June 6, 1958 in an accident in the senior TT race.
- The Australian 350cc world champion from 1957, Keith Campbell , died on July 13, 1958 in an accident on the Cadours circuit near Toulouse in France. He went off the track in a fast corner and crashed badly. The injuries suffered in the process resulted in immediate death.
