The 1987 motorcycle world championship season was the 39th in the history of the FIM - motorcycle road world championship .
Fifteen races were held in the classes up to 500 cm³ and up to 250 cm³, eleven in the class up to 125 cm³, ten in the class up to 80 cm³ and eight races for the teams .

In the class up to 500 cm³, Wayne Gardner was the first Australian to win the title with seven wins and points in every race. Randy Mamola finished second for the fourth time in his career, one point ahead of Eddie Lawson , who won five races. After 20 years, another Grand Prix in Japan took place in Suzuka .
Carlos Lavado was unable to successfully defend his title in the 250cc class due to an injury sustained during pre-season testing. Toni Mang won his fifth world title in front of four other Honda drivers. Loris Reggiani won the first race in this class for Aprilia at the San Marino Grand Prix .
In the 125 cm³ class, Fausto Gresini won the world championship with victories in ten out of eleven races. Jorge Martínez successfully defended his title in the 80s.
