Carlos Cardús i Carrió (born September 29, 1959 in Barcelona , Catalonia , Spain ) is a former Spanish motorcycle racer .

Cardús started his entire motorcycle world championship career in the 250 cm³ class and was runner-up behind John Kocinski in 1990 .

Career

Carlos Cardus started his career in the Spanish motorcycle road championship. In 1981 he was fourth in the 250 cc class, in 1982 Spanish 250cc champion. In the following year, in addition to the national championship, he also took part in the 250 cm³ European championship .

He made his debut in the motorcycle world championship at the Grand Prix of South Africa in 1983 in Kyalami on a JJ Cobas - Rotax , but did not reach the finish. In the further course of the season, in which he contested almost all World Championship races, Cardús drove in ninth place at his home Grand Prix in Jarama, the only points of the season. The Spaniard competed in Cobas-Rotax until 1985 , but did not achieve any top placements in the 250cc class. In 1986 he started on a Honda for the first time, but remained similarly inconspicuous.

In the 1987 season Carlos Cardús made a breakthrough. He achieved his first podium finish with third place in the Spanish team HRC-Ducados on a Honda NSR at the French Grand Prix in Le Mans . This was followed by further third places in Czechoslovakia and Brazil , which brought him to fifth place in the overall World Cup with a total of 70 points. In 1988 Cardus did not reach a podium and was ninth in the World Cup. In the 1989 season , Carlos Cardús, meanwhile starting on a Honda from the HRC-Repsol team , achieved his first Grand Prix victory at the French Grand Prix. In the overall ranking he reached fourth place this year.

The 1990 season was the most successful in Cardus' World Cup career. He won on Honda in Yugoslavia , France, Czechoslovakia and Sweden and achieved a total of nine podiums in 15 races. The world championship decision was made between him and the American Yamaha rider John Kocinski in the last race of the season, the Australian Grand Prix in Phillip Island , in which Cardus was world championship leader. It would have been enough for the Spaniard to finish second behind Kocinski, but he retired due to a broken gear lever while the American won the race. Cardus was ultimately runner-up world champion.

1991 was just as successful for Cardus as the previous year. He continued to compete for the Honda Repsol team, could not win a Grand Prix, but achieved eleven podium positions in 15 races and only had to admit defeat to the Italian Luca Cadalora and Helmut Bradl from Germany in the overall championship . In 1992 Cardus achieved his last podium finish in the 250cc World Championship with second place in Australia, and in the overall standings he finished eighth. In the 1993 season , the Spaniard only contested six Grands Prix and ended his career in the motorcycle world championship at the end of the season.

In 1994 , Carlos Cardús started on Ducati in two races of the Superbike World Championship in Albacete , in which he finished 13th and eighth.

Personal

His nephew Ricard Cardús is also a motorcycle racer and has been racing in the Moto2 class of the motorcycle world championship since 2010 .
