The titles of the European motorcycle championship in 1936 were at the XIII. The FICM Grand Prize awarded on July 5, 1936 in Hohenstein-Ernstthal as part of the XI. The German Grand Prix was held on the 8.7-kilometer Badberg-Viereck .

The European Grand Prix took place for the second time as part of the German Grand Prix . In the run-up to the event, the condition of the road surface was once again significantly improved.

Race courses

No title was awarded in the 175 cm³ class, as the starting field for the 30-lap race consisted of only five drivers and none of them reached the finish. Even the superior long time lying ahead DKW - factory driver Walfried Winkler had his machine after 21 laps with gearbox failure stop in the pits. The disappointing course of the race contributed decisively to the subsequent decline in racing activities in this displacement category.

In the race of the 250 cm³ class, the Excelsior driver Henry Tyrell-Smith was able to secure the second European title of his career after 35 laps. The Irishman benefited from the technical failures of the meanwhile leading Arthur Geiss , Omobono Tenni and Raffaele Alberti . Three and a half minutes behind, Ewald Kluge finished second on DKW , who had meanwhile fallen back to tenth place and who was also German champion in the quarter liter class in 1936 . Rudge driver Bernhard Port from Saarbrücken came in third place, one lap behind .

The English Norton factory driver Freddie Frith won the 350s . Behind the 27-year-old, the two German NSU pilots Oskar Steinbach and Heiner Fleischmann took second and third place. Before the end of the 350 cm³ race, many of the approximately 240,000 spectators were already on their way home, as the races had left a lot to be desired in terms of tension and a rain shower had fallen over the track.

In the half-liter class, the 39-year-old Scot Jimmie Guthrie defended the title he had won in Northern Ireland last year in an exciting 40-lap race . Second was HP Müller from Bielefeld on the big DKW, who managed to relegate “Crasher” White to third place in the last corner and thus break into the phalanx of Norton factory drivers. Kurt Mansfeld , also DKW, came fourth .
