The Circuito del Jarama is a 3.404 km long motorsport racetrack near San Sebastián de los Reyes near the Spanish capital Madrid , on which the Spanish Grand Prix was held nine times as part of the Formula 1 World Championship.

construction

The track was designed by Johannes "Hans" Hugenholtz , who, among other things, had already planned parts of the racetracks in Zandvoort (Netherlands) and Suzuka (Japan). The course was built in 1967 north of Madrid in an arid shrubland. He has a long straight; however, most of the route is made up of tight corners, which makes overtaking very difficult.

Back then, the track was considered quite modern as it was the first Grand Prix site to have safety nets.

Racing events

A Formula 1 Grand Prix was held in Jarama for the last time in 1981 after it was considered too narrow compared to the standard of modern courses. Today, a few sports car and motorcycle races as well as a run of the European Truck Racing Championship are held on the track .

The track record is 1: 16.44 min (160.328 km / h average speed) and was set in 1979 by Canadian Gilles Villeneuve in a Formula 1 Ferrari .

modernization

Since the necessary modernizations were not carried out, the entire system is in a rather ailing condition these days. The safety standards of the race track are largely considered to be out of date. In February 2014 the owner of the racetrack, the Spanish traffic club RACE , started a major renovation. The hospitality facilities and the pit lane are to be repaired and the main grandstand roofed over in three construction phases by 2021. The establishment of an automobile museum is also planned . The organization of major events such as Formula 1 or races of the motorcycle world championship is not planned in the future either.
