The Autódromo Internacional Nelson Piquet , also known under the name Jacarepaguá , was a motorsport racetrack in the suburb of the same name in Rio de Janeiro , Brazil . The track is named after the racing driver Nelson Piquet .
history
The route was opened in 1978. Since the racing course was built on marshland , the course was almost completely flat. It was 5,031 km (3,126 miles) in length.
The races of the Brazilian Grand Prix were held on this racetrack in 1978 and from 1981 to 1989 as part of Formula 1 .
From 1995 to 2004 the Grand Prix of Rio de Janeiro was held nine times in Jacarepaguá as part of the motorcycle world championship.
Between 1996 and 2000 , races of the US Champ Car series took place on a three-kilometer oval course called Emerson Fittipaldi Speedway , which surrounded the Grand Prix track and was partly used .
On January 9th, 2008 the city council of Rio de Janeiro decided to demolish the racetrack. The reason for this was the 2016 Olympic application . The plan was to use the artificially raised marshland for various sporting events as part of the Olympic Games.
