After it had started to rain slightly, Alain Prost ( Renault ), who had been in the lead for a long time, retired after an accident on lap 74, so that Riccardo Patrese ( Brabham ) took the lead. In the 76th and final lap, however, Pironi and the following Andrea de Cesaris ( Alfa Romeo ) stopped because of a lack of fuel and Derek Daly ( Williams ), who was third at the time, had to retire due to a gearbox damage, and his car had already collided Had lost the rear spoiler. So Patrese was able to make up for the lost places and win his first Grand Prix.
