Reports
background
Illegal water tanks were found on Nelson Piquet and Keke Rosberg's vehicles following the Brazilian Grand Prix . The teams claimed that the water it contained was used to cool the brakes. In fact, however, it was only used to bring the car to the required minimum weight of 580 kilograms after the race. During the race the tanks were empty and the racing cars were therefore too light. The consequent decision of the FISA was the disqualification of the two pilots who had reached places one and two. The affected teams Brabham and Williams , both members of the FOCA , saw it as a provocation. It was alleged that FISA wanted to use the measure to make Alain Prost , who as a Renault pilot belonged to a team closely related to FISA, the winner of the Grand Prix. In protest against this measure, a large part of the predominantly British FOCA teams agreed to boycott the San Marino Grand Prix. Thus only seven teams with 14 vehicles entered the race.
In the meantime, Derek Daly was signed by Williams as the new regular driver and thus successor to Carlos Reutemann , after Mario Andretti stepped in at short notice at the US Grand Prix . The gap that Daly left at Theodore Racing was to be bridged with Geoff Lees . However, due to the boycott of the San Marino GP, this did not happen.
Marc Surer had recovered from the injuries he sustained during tests in South Africa prior to the season . He was thus able to take his contractually guaranteed place at Arrows . His representative Brian Henton then moved to Tyrrell to replace Slim Borgudd , who then ended his Formula 1 career. Since Arrows also followed the boycott call, Marc Surer's comeback was postponed to the Belgian Grand Prix .
training
As a result of the training result, the Renault drivers René Arnoux and Alain Prost occupied the first row in front of the two Ferrari 126C2s driven by Gilles Villeneuve and Didier Pironi . Michele Alboreto followed in fifth on the grid in front of the two Alfa Romeo drivers Bruno Giacomelli and Andrea de Cesaris .
run
While Arnoux initially led the race, Prost was eliminated on the seventh lap due to an engine failure.
After Arnoux had also retired on lap 45, a Ferrari double lead resulted in the previously unspectacular race due to the small number of participants, to the delight of the Italian spectators . In the final phase, however, tension arose unexpectedly, as Pironi was apparently not ready to accept the stable order and let the leading Villeneuve win without a fight. He caught up with his teammate. The two drivers overtook each other several times in the final phase of the race. However, Villeneuve firmly believed that Pironi's intention was only to entertain the audience and that he would let him win in the end according to the team order. As a result, he reacted surprised and angry when Pironi overtook him again on the last lap and crossed the finish line as the winner.
Michele Alboreto was third ahead of Jean-Pierre Jarier and Eliseo Salazar . His team mate Manfred Winkelhock was disqualified because his car did not have the required minimum weight. Teo Fabi was not counted because he was eight laps behind the winner. No other driver reached the destination.
