The 1982 British Grand Prix took place on July 18 at the Brands Hatch Circuit and was the tenth race of the 1982 Formula 1 World Championship .

Reports

background

The March team gave up the use of a third works car, which ended Emilio de Villota's Formula 1 career . After recovering from injury, Nigel Mansell returned to the Lotus cockpit instead of test driver Roberto Moreno , who had represented him at the Dutch Grand Prix two weeks earlier .

At this point in time, John Watson was leading the championship standings one point ahead of Didier Pironi .

training

With Keke Rosberg , a driver who was not equipped with a turbo engine qualified for the first place on the grid for the second time this season. For the Finn this was also the first pole position of his Grand Prix career. With the Brabham drivers Riccardo Patrese and Nelson Piquet and Ferrari driver Didier Pironi, three turbo-powered vehicles followed ahead of Niki Lauda and René Arnoux .

With the exception of Eddie Cheever , all the pilots achieved their respective best times in both qualifying sessions with average speeds of more than 200 km / h.

run

In the run-up to the race, the preparations of the Brabham team were watched with excitement. A refueling facility was provided and apparently the plan was to start the race with the tank only half full and soft tires. This approach required a planned pit stop including refueling about halfway through the race, which was completely unusual at the time, but developed into the standard in Formula 1 over the course of the following years.

When the field started for the pre-start lap, Pole-Setter Rosberg's car stopped so that Patrese held pole position at the actual start of the race. However, this also did not move, so that Piquet took the lead and Pironi could only just avoid Brabham standing in front of him. Arnoux did not succeed and he crashed into the rear of the stationary car. As a result, John Watson had to move to the grass next to the track. Teo Fabi collided with a torn off bike and was eliminated.

Rosberg, who had to start the race from last place, already overtook eight opponents on the first lap. During the following laps he moved up to sixth place. Meanwhile, Piquet was leading Lauda and Pironi.

In the third lap there was a collision between Chico Serra and Jean-Pierre Jarier , with the Brazilian overturning. Trying to avoid the two casualties, Watson spun out.

When Piquet retired on lap ten due to a fuel problem, Lauda took the lead ahead of Pironi as well as Derek Daly and Derek Warwick , who overtook Elio de Angelis on lap twelve . With overtaking maneuvers against Daly on lap 18 and against Pironi on lap 25, Warwick even achieved second place before retiring on lap 41 due to a technical defect. As a result, Pironi again took second place behind Lauda.

Due to technical difficulties, de Angelis lost third place on the last lap to Patrick Tambay and was fourth ahead of Derek Daly and Alain Prost .

Brian Henton completed the fastest race lap of a Grand Prix for the first and only time.

As both Brabham drivers were eliminated after only a few laps, the team's new pit stop strategy was not yet applied in this race.
