Reports
background
Since Didier Pironi could no longer take part in the Formula 1 World Championship due to his injuries sustained during training for the German Grand Prix the weekend before , Scuderia Ferrari competed with just one car for Patrick Tambay .
training
The two Brabham pilots Nelson Piquet and Riccardo Patrese easily qualified for the front row. Alain Prost finished third on the grid next to Patrick Tambay and ahead of his Renault team- mate René Arnoux with a lap that was around a second slower . Keke Rosberg in the Williams, the first car without turbocharging, followed in sixth place .
run
While the five turbo vehicles immediately gained a lead over the rest of the field, a collision occurred further back between Bruno Giacomelli , Derek Daly and Andrea de Cesaris , which led to the elimination of all three drivers involved. At the end of the first lap, Tambay ran over a piece of debris from this collision, which resulted in a puncture. The resulting pit stop threw him back to the end of the field.
In the second round, Patrese took the lead from Piquet. At that time Elio de Angelis was the best non-turbo engine driver in fifth place. From then on, he benefited from the technical failures of the turbo drivers ahead of him throughout the race. Arnoux retired on lap 17 due to an engine failure. The Brabham team's strategy, which had been planned since the Grand Prix of Great Britain and was completely new at the time, of starting the race with a half-full tank and thus a light car and soft tires and then making a planned pit stop, had an effect for the first time, as Patrese despite the lead of the pit stop did not lose. However, he also retired on lap 28 due to an engine failure. Piquet, on the other hand, had problems with the new tires after his stop and could hardly move away from Rosberg. In the 32nd round he was eliminated, whereupon Rosberg caught up with de Angelis, who was now second.
When Prost finally had to give up on the 49th lap due to a defective injection pump, the duel between de Angelis and Rosberg turned into a duel for victory. This was a first for both pilots. At the penultimate crossing of the finish line, de Angelis still had a lead of around 1.6 seconds over Rosberg, who was significantly faster in the final phase. During the last lap, the Finn caught up and sat down on the start-finish straight next to de Angelis. This saved a lead of just 0.05 seconds over the line.
As it turned out later, this was the last victory of his team that Lotus founder Colin Chapman experienced. It took almost three years for the team to claim another Grand Prix victory at the 1985 Portuguese Grand Prix by Ayrton Senna .
Jacques Laffite achieved a podium finish for the first time this season as third. Patrick Tambay came fourth ahead of Niki Lauda and Mauro Baldi .
