Reports
background
Although there was only a week between the German Grand Prix and the eleventh round of the World Championship in Austria, Tyrrell completed the first copy of the new 012 . Michele Alboreto drove the car.
training
The training was again dominated by the two Ferrari drivers , with René Arnoux once again having to admit defeat to his team-mate Patrick Tambay . Nigel Mansell finished third in the Lotus 94T alongside Brabham driver Nelson Piquet . Alain Prost followed before Riccardo Patrese , Bruno Giacomelli and Eddie Cheever .
As has been customary for several race weekends, no driver of a naturally aspirated car was among the top ten on the grid. As the best of these pilots, Niki Lauda took 14th place.
run
While Tambay took the lead ahead of Arnoux, Piquet, Prost and Mansell, Elio de Angelis and Bruno Giacomelli collided . Further back in the field bounced Piercarlo Ghinzani in the Williams FW08C of Jacques Laffite and pushed that to fulfill the Arrows A6 of Marc Surer , who consequently with Danny Sullivan collided. Corrado Fabi had to brake sharply so as not to be involved in this accident . The immediately following John Watson could not react in time and crashed into the stern of the Osella pilot. Three of the eight pilots involved in the collisions were eliminated immediately, Giacomelli had to retire shortly afterwards due to consequential damage.
While the Ferrari double lead continued, Piquet and Prost dueled for third place behind. When the leading duo ran up against Jean-Pierre Jarier , who had to be lapped, in the 21st lap , Tambay was severely hampered. Arnoux took this opportunity to take the lead. Piquet also got past Tambay.
Since the Brabham team made the pit stops for refueling and tire changes faster than Ferrari, Piquet was able to take the lead on lap 28. After Tambay was eliminated due to an oil leak and Piquet fell back on lap 38 due to an engine problem, Arnoux took the lead again from Prost, who quickly caught up. In the 48th lap, he passed his compatriot and won.
Behind Arnoux, Piquet finished third in front of Cheever, Mansell and Lauda.
