Reports
background
As in the previous year, the original route variant of the Österreichring was used without a chicane at the end of the start / finish straight.
Peter Gethin left McLaren after the German Grand Prix to permanently replace Pedro Rodríguez at BRM for the rest of the season . The McLaren cockpit he freed up was awarded to Jackie Oliver for this and the coming race .
With Niki Lauda in a third factory March and Helmut Marko in a fourth BRM, two Austrians came to their first Grand Prix participation this weekend on the occasion of their home race. The premiere of Markos had actually been planned for the German GP two weeks earlier, but failed because of its non-qualification in a private McLaren M7C .
training
On the grid, Jackie Stewart was only surpassed by Jo Siffert , who secured pole position with a lead of around two tenths of a second. Stewart's team-mate François Cevert came in third, demonstrating his steady upward trend during the current season.
run
Siffert took the lead right from the start and successfully defended himself against attacks by Stewart, who in turn was pursued by Regazzoni , Cevert, Ickx and Schenken . Regazzoni had to retire due to technical problems, so that Cevert moved up to third.
While Siffert increasingly separated from his pursuers at the front, Cevert was able to catch up with Stewart, who was struggling with handling problems on his car. Because of this, he let his teammate pass on lap 23 before finally having to give up completely on lap 36. When Ickx also retired four laps later and Ronnie Peterson , who would then have been the only one who would have had a purely mathematical chance of winning the world title, was in a hopeless position, Stewart was confirmed early as the 1971 world champion despite his retirement and three remaining races.
Cevert had to retire on lap 43 with engine failure, so that Emerson Fittipaldi , who had recently overtaken Schenken, took second place .
Siffert's lead was so great towards the end of the race that even a problem with a tire shortly before the end could no longer prevent him from winning. Because of this handicap, however, Fittipaldi managed to catch up to just under four seconds.
It was Siffert's second and last Grand Prix win and at the same time his first hat trick .
Tim Schenken and Graham Hill achieved the only podium finish and the best team result for Brabham this year, finishing third and fifth .
