Reports
background
For the first time this season, BRM reported five works cars. In addition to the four vehicles that had contested the Italian Grand Prix two weeks earlier , a fifth car was made available for George Eaton . The Ferrari factory team was increased to three vehicles with Mario Andretti , as already several times during the season.
McLaren only reported Denis Hulme as a works driver, while the second McLaren was driven by the customer team Penske-White with Formula 1 newcomer Mark Donohue . In addition, several private drivers with partially outdated vehicles completed the field.
training
Both Tyrrell qualified for the three-car front row. Jo Siffert's BRM stood between the two. With starting positions 12, 13 and 18, the Ferrari surprisingly turned out to be less than competitive.
Henri Pescarolo was injured in a training accident and therefore had to forego the start of the race. Debutant Chris Craft also did not compete due to engine problems.
run
After a fatal accident occurred in a Formula Ford frame race , the start of the Grand Prix was delayed for some time. It was raining and Howden Ganley damaged his BRM on one of the warm-up laps so he couldn't start.
Jackie Stewart initially took the lead in front of Ronnie Peterson and Jean-Pierre Beltoise . On the third lap, Graham Hill retired after a driving error on the wet road. Five laps later, Clay Regazzoni did the same . Although his car caught fire, he escaped unharmed.
While Stewart was relatively unrestricted at the front, Peterson fought with Beltoise for second place. The duel only ended after the Frenchman retired on lap 16 through his own fault. Meanwhile, Mark Donohue was the only driver in this race to make a pit stop without losing his third place. The gap between him and the two leaders became almost impossible to catch.
On lap 18, Peterson managed to overtake Stewart and take the lead. The Scot countered on lap 31. The now established ranking of the first three did not change any more, as Peterson damaged the front of his car by a collision while lapping George Eaton and as a result could no longer keep the pace set by Stewart.
The race was canceled after 64 of the planned 80 race laps due to worsening weather conditions and falling darkness. It was the first time in the history of Formula 1 that this measure was taken.
Mark Donohue finished his Formula 1 debut in a respectable third place. The fastest race lap that was set by Denis Hulme was almost half a minute slower than Jackie Stewart's pole time, which was set in dry conditions.
Registration list
1 The cars marked with a "T" after the start number were available to their respective drivers as T- cars , but were not used.
