James Howden Ganley (born December 24, 1941 in Hamilton ) is a former New Zealand racing driver who participated in a total of 35 Formula 1 races.
Career
Howden Ganley came to Great Britain by ship from New Zealand in 1961 with £ 50 in his pocket. The young man's goal was a career in motorsport. He took a badly paid job as a mechanic at a racing school to finance his first activities as a racing driver. In the mid-1960s, he was already driving in the British Formula 3 championship and was able to celebrate some successes there. In 1966 he moved to the USA and became chief mechanic in Peter Revson's CanAm team .
Back in Europe, Ganley finished second in the British Formula 5000 Championship on his private McLaren M10B in 1970 , just barely beaten by Peter Gethin . Formula 1 teams finally noticed him and Louis Stanley from BRM presented him with a two-year contract, which Ganley immediately signed.
Ganley contested 35 Formula 1 races and achieved a total of ten championship points between 1971 and 1974 . He also took part in numerous Grand Prix that were not officially counted as part of the World Championship .
During his service with BRM, Ganley showed consistent performances, the climax of which were two fourth places, but he mostly lagged behind his teammates. In the 1973 season he went to the start for the Iso Marlboro team from Frank Williams , but Ganley only reached the points once with a sixth place in Canada .
For John Wyer , as a partner of Vern Schuppan , he drove a full season in the Brands World Championship with the Mirage M6 . The best place for the duo was second overall at the 1000 km of Spa-Francorchamps .
In his last season as an active driver in 1974 , he initially contested two Grand Prix for the March team before Ganley was signed by the new Japanese team Maki for the rest of the season. Ganley made his workshop available to the Maki mechanics; it became the technical basis of the racing team. The Maki project was unsuccessful. Even at the first appearance at the British Grand Prix at Brands Hatch there was no question of qualifying. The car was bulky and way too heavy. At the German Grand Prix at the Nürburgring , the Maki experiment ended for Ganley: During training, he had a serious accident in the airfield section when the Maki's suspension broke. Ganley was taken to hospital with a broken leg. Although he was able to recover completely despite complicated fractures, his motorsport career was over. Just one day later, Mike Hailwood had an accident in the race in the Pflanzgarten section on the jump hill, also after the suspension had broken. Hailwood also suffered severe leg injuries and had to end his Formula 1 career.
Together with the Australian racing driver Tim Schenken , Ganley founded the motorsport company Tiga Race Cars Ltd. in 1974 . , which the two operated until 1989.
