In the second law on health insurance for farmers (KVLG 1989), all provisions on statutory health insurance for farmers , helping family members and old age dividers are summarized. The KVLG 1989 came into force on January 1, 1989. Compared to general health insurance ( SGB ​​V ), its special feature is the compulsory insurance for self-employed persons ( Section 2 ) and the granting of business assistance ( Section 11 ) for the entrepreneur instead of sick pay.

According to Section 68 of Book I of the Social Code, the law is a special component of the Social Security Code and is to be classified there in the long term.
