The history of Scuderia Ferrari began in the sports car world championship at the 1953 Mille Miglia . The 1000-mile race was the second race of the season in 1953 and ended with the overall victory of Gianni Marzotto and Marco Crosara in the factory Ferrari 340MM Vignale . More than two decades followed, in which the Scuderia registered racing cars for the races of the world championship. Between 1953 and 1972 , the Italian racing team won 13 championship titles and finished more than 70 races at the top of the overall standings. In the second half of the season, the Scuderia team management decided, in consultation with the company's founder, Enzo Ferrari , to concentrate racing activities entirely on Formula 1 in the future , and thus abandon sports car racing. The 1973 Watkins Glen 6-hour race was the last sports car world championship race with Ferrari factory cars participating.
The racing season was dominated by the confrontation between the factory cars from Matra and Ferrari, which was clearly decided in favor of the French prototypes . While Henri Pescarolo and Gérard Larrousse achieved five victories of the season, the second Matra MS670 , driven by François Cevert and Jean-Pierre Beltoise, remained without a win. However, Cevert was able to record a success as he drove for some time in the winning car of Larrousse and Pescarolo at the 6-hour race in Vallelunga . The two Ferrari successes in Monza and on the Nürburgring were achieved by Jacky Ickx and Brian Redman .
The Scuderia's last World Cup appearance ended with a second final place. The world championship was won by Matra with 124 points ahead of Ferrari with 115 points.
