Weserlust

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Weserlust was a restaurant on the Osterdeich in Bremen. It was opened on May 13, 1894, financed by Franz Schütte . At that time it was still in the village of Hastedt. It was a hall building with verandas, terraces and turrets designed by the architect Karl Bollmann, an open-air stage was opened in 1911, and later it also had a "concert garden" and bowling alleys.

The house was in an idyllic location in rural surroundings with a view of the Weser, accessible by tram from 1900, and in 1905 the botanical garden was laid out right next to it . However, the attractiveness sank in the 1930s, in 1932 the Osterdeich had changed from a quiet suburban avenue to a long-distance road for car traffic in the direction of Hamburg. The restaurant and garden were closed in 1938, the house was confiscated by the Wehrmacht and used to accommodate foreign workers during World War II.

From 1948 a cinema was set up in the house. In 1950, Radio Bremen recorded its first orchestral concerts there due to the lack of a broadcasting hall. The garden became overgrown, the facade deteriorated more and more. In 1963 the cinema was closed, in 1964 the building was torn down, and 50 condominiums were built on the site.
