The Sports Car World Championship 1987 was the 35th edition of the FIA Sports Car World Championship, which was announced for the first time in 1953 . The racing series comprised ten races, starting with the 360 km race in Jarama on March 22nd and ending with the 1000 km race in Fuji on September 27 of this year.

championship

Since 1981 , drivers' titles have also been awarded in the sports car world championship . Last year, the Briton Derek Bell won this title, which started in 1986 for the Porsche works team . Brun Motorsport secured the team standings .

In 1987, in addition to the Group C prototypes of classes C1 and C2, vehicles from the IMSA GTP series were also eligible to start. Both in the driver and in the team classification, points were awarded for the top ten as follows: 20-15-12-10-8-6-4-3-2-1. Only the best seven results of the season were considered. There were special rules for drivers, so they had to cover a minimum number of laps in each lap in order to be able to score points for the world championship. The Belgian Bernard de Dryver , for example, did not succeed in this at the 24-hour race at Le Mans . Although he was runner-up there overall, the 15 points scored were not included in the ranking.

The team championship ended with a clear success for the Jaguar works team, which won eight of the ten races of the season. The Brazilian Raul Boesel became the new driver world champion with five wins . The team ranking of the group C2 teams went to Spice Engineering ; the driver standings of the Spaniards Fermín Vélez .
