First steps in monoposto sport

Mallock contested his first race in 1971 in British Formula 3 club races. The Mallock U2 Mk.11B was an unconventional design, with a 1.6 liter Ford engine placed in front of the driver. A front engine concept was completely unusual in the early 1960s. The racing car was therefore the attraction in the various paddocks. Mallock finished sixth at Castle Combe with the car , fifth at Thruxton and fourth at Oulton Park .

In 1972 Mallock drove the successor model, the U2 Mk.12 . The car was only used at the beginning of the Formula 3 season, after which the Mallock self-construction project had to be abandoned for lack of funds. In 1973 he switched to Formula Atlantic and won one race each that year and the following year. He finished the overall ranking of the MCD / Southern Organs British Formula Atlantic Championship in 1974 in third behind Jim Crawford and Alan Jones . From 1976 the Briton drove not only the Formula Atlantic but also races in the Formula 2 European Championship and in the British Formula 5000 . He celebrated his greatest successes in monoposto racing in 1979 and 1981 with his overall victories in the British Formula Atlantic Championship.

In 1978 he reached in the Aurora AFX Formula 1 series with 12 points at the end of the season, 16th overall. In 1979 he remained without points and in 1980 he was tenth overall.

Sports car racing

His first countable result in sports car races was the fourth final place together with Guy Edwards on a works - Lola T296 in the 300 km race at the Salzburgring in 1977 . The race was part of the sports car world championship in 1977 . In 1979 he made his debut at the 24 Hours of Le Mans , where he raced eight times up to 1989 . He had his most successful participation in 1982 when he finished seventh. In the 1980s he regularly competed in World Sports Car Championship races and had his strongest year in 1987 when he was among the top ten in the final standings at the championship races in Jerez , Monza , Silverstone , Nuremberg , Brands Hatch , Spa and Fuji came.

Mallock was active as a driver until 2004. His last race was the Spa-Francorchamps 24-hour race in 2004 .

Designer and team leader

In 1979 Mallock founded his first racing team, which many years later became the RML Group . As a driver, he was involved in the development of the Nimrod NRA / C2 for Group C , which competed in the World Sports Car Championship in 1983 and 1984. This car was powered by an Aston Martin engine . Over the years, the constructive influence of Mallock on the respective developments of racing vehicles increased. The RML Group was and is active in many areas of motorsport. The team fielded the MG-Lola EX257 in Le Mans and the European Le Mans Series , the Acura ARX-01 in the same racing series, developed the vehicles for various touring car championships for Chevrolet , was active in rallies and built Ford GT40 replicas in Small series.

Under the leadership of Ray Mallock, the team won in 2012 with drivers Robert Huff , Alain Menu and Yvan Muller superior to the World Touring Car Championship .
