Alain Menu (born August 9, 1963 in Geneva ) is a Swiss automobile racing driver . He drove in the British Touring Car Championship ( BTCC ). He was one of the most successful touring car drivers of the 1990s and won the British Touring Car Championship (BTCC) twice (1997 and 2000). He worked for Chevrolet in the World Touring Car Championship ( WTCC ). In 2012 he became vice world champion.
Career
Menu, the son of a farmer, began his career in Formula Ford , where he drove from 1985 to 1987. He then moved to the British Formula 3 Championship for three years . After he took second place in the championship there in 1990, Menu went to the Formula 3000 European Championship in 1991 . Back in Great Britain he competed for BMW in the BTCC British Touring Car Championship . After a quad accident , he had to cancel the season halfway through.
Menu drove for Renault in the BTCC until 1998 . In the 1993 season he was equipped with a Renault 19 , with which he finished 10th. From 1994 the Renault 19 was replaced by a Renault Laguna , with which Menu won 2nd place three years in a row and the championship in 1997. He finished fourth in the 1998 championship and moved to Ford . There he won the championship again in 2000 with a Ford Mondeo .
Alain Menu switched to the DTM , where he drove for Opel from 2001 to 2003 with moderate success (18th, 10th and 9th place) . At the same time, he contested several races for Ferrari in the FIA GT Championship and the American Le Mans Series (ALMS). In 2004 Menu completed two races in the British Porsche Carrera Cup. From 2005 the French-speaking Swiss competed for the RML-Chevrolet team in the World Touring Car Championship (WTCC) with a Chevrolet Lacetti. He reached 13th place in 2005 , 15th place and one win in 2006 , 6th place (five wins) in 2007 and 9th place (three wins) in 2008 . In 2009 he switched from the Lacetti model to the Cruze with Chevrolet and finished in 10th place (two wins). Menu won a total of 23 races in the WTCC and was runner-up in 2012. When Chevrolet left the WTCC, Alain Menu also said goodbye to this racing series.
In 2013 Menu drove a few races in the Porsche Supercup and in 2014 he will also be present in the series for the specialist auto tech team. Alain Menu has been driving a Volkswagen CC from the BMR team in the BTCC since 2014 .
