World Touring Car Championship 2012
The 2012 World Touring Car Championship was the ninth season of the World Touring Car Championship (WTCC) and the eighth since the series was restarted in 2005. It began on March 11 in Monza and ended on November 18 in Macau . 24 races were held on 12 race weekends.
Rule changes
Sporting changes
The qualifying was modified. There were still two qualifying segments. In the first section, the twelve fastest drivers qualified for the second part of the qualifying. The five fastest pilots in this segment received points according to the scheme 5-4-3-2-1. The starting grid for the first race resulted from the result of the timed practice. In the second race, the first ten drivers from the second qualifying segment started in reverse order.
technical changes
In the 2012 season, only 1.6-liter turbo engines were allowed to be used. An engine change during the season was prohibited. Exceptions could be made in the event of accidents. When the engine was changed, the vehicle was moved to the end of the field. Six turbo units were allowed to be used during the season. Here, too, non-compliance with the rule was sanctioned with a penalty transfer to the end of the starting grid.
Each driver received 16 new tires from Yokohama when they first entered the season . From the second event he was allowed to use 20 tires, of which a maximum of 12 were new. In addition, 16 rain tires were available to each driver per race weekend.

Racing calendar
The 2012 World Touring Car Championship racing calendar was published on December 7, 2011. The races in Belgium, Germany, Great Britain and the Czech Republic no longer took place in 2012. Instead, WTCC races were held for the first time in Austria , Slovakia and the United States . In Austria, the Salzburgring was used . The venue for the US race was the Sonoma Raceway in Sonoma , California , which also hosted the IndyCar Series and NASCAR Sprint Cups in 2012 . In addition, the Moroccan race in Marrakech returned to the racing calendar. In addition, a race in Argentina was initially planned. However, this was canceled in January. The Slovakiaring in Slovakia was selected as the substitute venue for the Argentine race .
There was also a change of race tracks. The Portuguese race no longer took place on the temporary street circuit Circuito da Boavista in Porto . The Circuito do Estoril was first announced as the new racetrack . Shortly before the start of the season, however, the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve was announced as the Portuguese venue. The Chinese race changed from the Shanghai Tianma Circuit to the Shanghai International Circuit within Shanghai .
The order of the races was changed compared to the previous year. First, the races took place in Europe and the Moroccan race in North Africa. Then there was one race each in South and North America. As in the previous season, the season ended with three races in Asia. With this division, the series wanted to avoid clashes with the European Football Championship 2012 (June 8th to July 1st) and the 2012 Olympic Games (July 27th to August 12th).

Manufacturer rating
The manufacturer who had accumulated the most points in the manufacturers' championship by the end of the season was the manufacturer world champion. When distributing points for the manufacturers' classification, only the two best-placed vehicles from the respective manufacturer were taken into account in the overall result of the respective race. Your points were added up and incorporated into the manufacturer's rating. All vehicles of the respective manufacturer with a lower ranking were "invisible" for this rating. In the point allocation, the vehicles from other manufacturers placed behind moved up. The vehicles considered by this regulation were awarded points according to the following scheme:

Yokohama drivers' championship
In the Yokohama Trophy , only drivers who were classified as "private drivers" were listed. When allocating points for the Yokohama Trophy , the placements among the participants in the Yokohama Trophy of the respective race were taken into account. As a special feature, there was a bonus point for the pole position (only the first race per race weekend) and the fastest race lap among the participants in the Yokohama Trophy . In addition, at the Guia Race in Macau as the end of the season for the placements among the participants in the Yokohama Trophy, double the number of points was awarded. The eight drivers who came first in the classification of the Yokohama Trophy in each race received points according to the following scheme:
