Kristian Poulsen (born November 18, 1975 in Flensburg , Germany ) is a Danish racing driver . He competed in the World Touring Car Championship (WTCC) from 2008 to 2011 .

Career

Poulsen began his motorsport career in karting in 1985 and was active in this sport until 1993. The Dane then competed in various rallies between 1995 and 2007 . Between 1999 and 2006 he started in three rallies of the World Rally Championship , but could not score any points.

In 2007 Poulsen switched to touring car racing and finished 18th in the Danish Touring Car Championship . He also took part in the European Touring Car Cup and finished the season in third place in the Super 2000 classification . In 2008, Poulsen improved to eleventh place in the DTC with a win and was sixth in the Super 2000 classification of the European Touring Car Cup. Poulsen also made his debut in the World Touring Car Championship (WTCC) in 2008 . In a BMW 320si , he took part in three racing weekends for Poulsen Motorsport , his own racing team, and one racing weekend for Wiechers-Sport . He didn't get any points.

In 2009 Poulsen started for the Liqui Moly Team Engstler in a BMW 320si in every race of the WTCC season. While his team-mate Franz Engstler came in 16th overall, Poulsen stayed in tenth place as the best result without points. He finished sixth in the Independents' Trophy . In addition, Poulsen made his debut at the Le Mans 24-hour race in 2009 . In a Porsche RS Spyder Evo , he finished tenth in the final classification and winner of the LMP2 classification together with Emmanuel Collard and Casper Elgaard . He also took part in a race in the Le Mans Series and won the LMP2 standings there too. In the DTC, the racing driver only competed in three races this season and finished 18th overall. In 2010 , Poulsen skipped the first two race weekends of the WTCC and then competed in a BMW 320si that was used by his own team. Poulsen scored points in several races and ended the season with a sixth place as the best result in 14th place in the drivers' world championship. In the internal Independents' Trophy he took third place. The racing driver also finished seventh in the Super 2000 classification of the European Touring Car Cup in 2010.

In 2011 Poulsen returned to the Liqui Moly Team Engstler and became Engstler's teammate again. In the second race in Monza , he achieved his first podium finish in the WTCC with a third place. In the further course of the season he drove regularly into the points, but was not again on the podium. He finished the season in seventh place in the drivers' world championship and was ahead of Engstler, who had won a race. The Yokohama Trophy , the classification for private drivers, was won by Poulsen two points ahead of his compatriot Michel Nykjær . Poulsen announced after the end of the season that he would leave the WTCC.
