World Touring Car Championship 2011

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 2011 World Touring Car Championship was the eighth season of the WTCC and the seventh since the series restarted in 2005 . After several changes, 24 races were held on twelve tracks.

Changes in 2011

There were some new rules for 2011. One of them concerns the engines. According to the new regulations, in addition to the previous 2000 cm³ turbo diesel and naturally aspirated engines, 1600 cm³ turbo gasoline engines were introduced. In the long term, all engines are to be converted. Another new rule concerns the starting grid for the second run. So far, the drivers started according to their finish in the first run, the first eight in reverse order. In 2011 the first part of the qualification was decisive. The ten fastest drivers there no longer qualified for the second part, but started the second run in reverse order from the first five rows.

At the beginning of December 2010, BMW announced that it would leave the WTCC at the factory and concentrate fully on the long distance and the DTM project. However, they still want to support private teams. For this purpose, BMW offers its customers a "conversion kit" with the new 1600 cm³ turbo engine and a sequential six-speed gearbox. The "new" car is then called the BMW 320 TC (TC for Touring Car).

Racing calendar

A first version of the racing calendar was published on September 8, 2010. The event in China was new to the calendar. A performance in Argentina was also planned as a second stop. This was replaced by Belgium in a second version on November 3rd. At the same time, the FIA confirmed the change of the British route from Brands Hatch to Donington . In addition, it was initially planned to hold the race in Brazil in Interlagos instead of in Curitiba . However, due to construction work on the route and logistical problems, this was abandoned at the beginning of February. On March 8, the event in Morocco was canceled. The Hungaroring acted as a replacement for the first time . As in every odd year, the race in Portugal took place in Porto . In September, the Chinese race, which originally was in Guangdong was to take place, according to Shanghai to the Shanghai Tianma Circuit laid.

Manufacturer rating

The manufacturer who had accumulated the most points in the manufacturers' championship by the end of the season was the manufacturer world champion. When distributing points for the manufacturers' classification, only the two best-placed vehicles from the respective manufacturer were taken into account in the overall result of the respective race. Your points were added up and incorporated into the manufacturer's rating. All vehicles of the respective manufacturer with a lower ranking were "invisible" for this rating. In the point allocation, the vehicles from other manufacturers placed behind moved up. The vehicles considered by this regulation were awarded points according to the following scheme:

Yokohama drivers' championship

In the Yokohama Trophy , only drivers who were classified as "private drivers" were listed. When allocating points for the Yokohama Trophy , the placements among the participants in the Yokohama Trophy of the respective race were taken into account. As a special feature, there was a bonus point for the pole position (only the first race per race weekend) and the fastest race lap among the participants in the Yokohama Trophy . In addition, at the Guia Race in Macau as the end of the season for the placements among the participants in the Yokohama Trophy, double the number of points was awarded. The eight drivers who came first in the classification of the Yokohama Trophy in each race received points according to the following scheme:
