Stefano d'Aste (born February 26, 1974 in Genoa ) is an Italian racing driver .

Career

Stefano d'Aste began his international career in 2004 in the European Touring Car Championship , which he finished in seventh place in the private drivers' championship.

In 2005 he moved to Proteam Motorsport in the World Touring Car Championship , where he was behind the wheel of a BMW 320i . Although he had not collected a single championship point so far, d'Aste moved into the limelight at the race weekend in Spa-Francorchamps, Belgium . Since he only finished the first run in 16th place, he had to start the second race from far behind. On the wet road he fought his way forward and was just a few corners to the finish right behind the leading group. There was a collision between the leaders in the bus stop chicane. To avoid the accident, d'Aste shortened the chicane and then crossed the finish line first. After the race, however, he received a time penalty that put him back in second place. Nevertheless, this remained his best result in the World Touring Car Championship. He finished the season third in the privateer drivers' championship.

Another year at Proteam Motorsport followed in 2006 . Although d'Aste finished three races as the best private driver, this time there were no championship points. This was also due to the strengthened works teams with new vehicles, against which the old BMW 320i was no longer sufficiently competitive. He had a chance at championship points in the second race in Istanbul . However, he was involved in a collision while lying in the front of the points and as a result passed through to the rear. He defended his third place in the private driver championship. In 2007 , d'Aste switched to Wiechers-Sport , where he now received a newer BMW 320si . Although he still remained without points, he was able to win the privateer championship with a narrow margin thanks to constant results. For the 2008 season , d'Aste returned to Proteam Motorsport. In the second race at Brands Hatch he was able to achieve championship points for the first time in three years with seventh place. Although he finished several races as the best private driver, he lost his title in the private driver championship, in which he only reached third place.

Before the 2009 season there was another switch to Wiechers-Sport. However, despite several races as the best privateer, d'Aste could not achieve the targeted title win in the private drivers' championship. He was often involved in collisions while lying in a promising position, so that a sixth place in the first race in Oschersleben was his only point placement. Thus, he finished the season again in third place in the private driver classification. In 2010 , d'Aste will be racing for Proteam Motorsport again.
