Michel Nykjær (born September 17, 1979 ) is a former Danish racing driver .

Career

In 1989 Nykjær made his karting debut , in which he was able to record his first race win in Denmark in 1990. In addition to the title of kart champion of the Zealand region in 1993, he was able to celebrate other successes. But from 1994 Nykjær's motorsport activities were suspended, which only revived in 1998 with participation in the Danish Group N Cup. After he had achieved the title in the class up to 2000 cm³ in this same racing series in 2002, he was promoted to the Danish Touring Car Championship in 2003 . There he was at the front very early on and came eleventh in the final round. In 2007 he won the title on a Seat Leon and also won the European Touring Car Cup for Super 2000 vehicles on a Seat Leon from GR Asia . In 2008 Nykjær switched to Poulsen Motorsport on a BMW 320si E90 . After a mixed start to the season, he secured a race win and fourth place in the championship at the last two events of the season. The biggest success in 2008 was winning the European Touring Car Cup again. In a Chevrolet Lacetti from Chevrolet Motorsport Danmark , he won the title with a race win and a second place. From 2010 to 2011 he competed for the Spanish SUNRED team in a Seat Leon in the World Touring Car Championship . At the second race in Monza (2010) Nykjær had the first opportunity to win a world championship run. He was in the lead for a long time until a puncture threw him out of the race on the last lap. The 2010 season ended Nykjær in 11th place. The following year he achieved his only podium place to date with a third place in the first race in Japan. In the overall standings, Nykjær was tenth. His team was also registered in the privateer driver standings, in which he finished second, two points behind his compatriot Kristian Poulsen . Despite his good season, Nykjær's main sponsor withdrew and so he remained without a cockpit in the WTCC. In 2012, Nykjær drove the entire season in the STCC in a Chevrolet Cruze for Chevrolet Motorsport Sweden and finished third with five wins. While the season was in progress, Nykjær still made a WTCC start as Pasquale Di Sabatino from private team bamboo engineering fell ill. Nykjær was named as a substitute and drove his Chevrolet Cruze in Curitiba to fifth and sixth place.
