In 2005 he drove for the Jordan team and achieved his first podium at the US Grand Prix in Indianapolis in 2005 with third place out of only six drivers who started. It was also the first podium for a Portuguese Formula 1 driver. In addition, no other driver has managed to complete 16 races in a row since his debut. Only Max Chilton was able to beat this record.

In the 2006 season he stayed in the team that was now called Midland F1 Racing and started at the side of Christijan Albers for the Russian debutants. Midland itself was sold to Spyker before the Chinese Grand Prix .

For the Formula 1 2007 season Monteiro had found no place. The Midland successor Spyker F1 had decided against the Portuguese and the German Adrian Sutil as the second regular driver.

Since 2007 he has been driving in the World Touring Car Championship for the Seat Sport Team. In 2008 he took his first victory in a Seat Leon TDI at the second race in Puebla. He drove for the Spanish brand until 2012, but in his final year for a private team, as Seat had withdrawn from the championship at the factory.

Monteiro has been driving for Honda since 2013 . After the second race weekend of the 2016 season at the Slovakiaring , he led the drivers' championship for the first time. This makes him the first Portuguese to have achieved this in an FIA championship.

In 2019, Monteiro, together with his driver colleagues Markus Oestreich Dominik Fugel and Cedrik Totz, won the TCR class victory for the Honda works team in a Honda Civic Type R TCR in the 24-hour race at the Nürburgring.
