The 2005 Australian Grand Prix took place on March 6th at the Albert Park Circuit in Melbourne and was the first race of the 2005 Formula 1 World Championship . The winner was Giancarlo Fisichella ( Renault ) ahead of Rubens Barrichello ( Ferrari ) and Fernando Alonso (Renault).

qualification

In the first qualifying round on Saturday afternoon, Giancarlo Fisichella drove the best lap time in a Renault. Jarno Trulli and Mark Webber followed in 2nd and 3rd place. Defending champion Michael Schumacher only came 19th in this round. In the second qualifying round on Sunday morning, Mark Webber set the fastest lap ahead of Giancarlo Fisichella and David Coulthard . Michael Schumacher did not drive a lap at all in this round. After adding up the lap times from both qualifying rounds, Giancarlo Fisichella secured pole position with a time of 3: 01.460 minutes ahead of Jarno Trulli and Mark Webber.

Giancarlo Fisichella won the first race of the season. Rubens Barrichello and Fernando Alonso completed the podium, while Coulthard, Webber, Montoya, Klien and Raikkonen took the further points .

Fernando Alonso set the fastest lap in 1: 25.683 minutes.

Christijan Albers had to park his Minardi on lap 15 due to a technical defect. Michael Schumacher and Nick Heidfeld collided on lap 43, which meant the end for both drivers. Together with Albers, only 3 out of 20 drivers did not finish.
