The 2006 Formula 1 World Championship was the 57th season of the Formula 1 World Championship . It was held over 18 races from March 12th to October 22nd. As in the previous year, Fernando Alonso was the driver world champion, while Renault defended the constructors' championship . It was the last season for the time being that Michael Schumacher took part as a driver. The seven-time world champion finished at the end of the season for the time being its active Formula 1 career, but returned in 2010 back into F1 back.
Changes in 2006
Racetracks
For the first time since 1996 , the Australian Grand Prix was not the first race of the season, but took place as the third race in April. The reason was an overlap with the Commonwealth Games from March 15 to 26 in Melbourne . The Belgian Grand Prix in Spa-Francorchamps was removed from the racing calendar in the 2006 season due to renovation work on the pit area, so that only 18 instead of 19 races took place.
Regulations
In order to make the qualification on Saturday more attractive for the spectators, three elimination runs were carried out. Initially, all drivers had 15 minutes to achieve a good lap time on any amount of fuel. The 16 best drivers were given another 15 minutes after the end of the first elimination round to qualify as one of 10 participants in the qualifying final round. In the final round, the starting positions 1 to 10 were finally determined in a period of initially 20, but since the Grand Prix of Great Britain 15 minutes. Before the final lap, until the start of the race on Sunday, there was the last opportunity to refuel the racing car, so that the fuel strategy not only had to include the tactics for the course of the race, but also for qualifying.
The tactic of the first phase of the final training session was to use as much gasoline as possible to make the car lighter. In the last seven to eight minutes, the fast lap times were usually achieved after changing tires (up to two times). The amount of fuel consumed could be replenished before the race. However, only the number of laps that were within the 110 percent of the fastest time counted. Since the European Grand Prix , however , there has been a 120 percent limit for the in and out laps - i.e. for the laps out of the pit lane and back.
The tire changes that were still forbidden in the 2005 season were allowed again, with each driver being limited to 14 sets of tires: 7 sets for dry conditions, 4 sets for wet conditions and 3 sets for extreme weather. In addition, the specifications for the engines have been changed. 8 cylinders with 2.4 l displacement were now prescribed instead of the previous 10 cylinders with max. 3.0 l displacement. Even before Minardi was taken over by Red Bull, an exception was made for the team - in order to save costs, it was allowed to continue to use V10 engines, albeit with limited air volume and speed. This rule was retained after the team was sold to Scuderia Toro Rosso .
For the history of rule changes in Formula 1, see also: Formula 1 rules .
Teams
BMW ended the previous collaboration with Williams . BMW Sauber F1 started as the new BMW works team after taking over the Sauber team. Williams was now supplied with engines by Cosworth and no longer by BMW.
With Honda Racing F1 , Honda took part in Formula 1 with a works team for the first time since 1968. The team emerged from BAR .
After Jordan was taken over by the Midland Group of Russian millionaire Alexander Shnaider in the 2005 season , the team now competed as MF1 Racing .
Red Bull Racing was now supplied with engines by Ferrari rather than Cosworth. In addition, Toro Rosso entered as the "Red Bull Junior Team" after Minardi was taken over by Red Bull . Former Formula 1 driver Gerhard Berger took over 50% of the team's shares . With Dietrich Mateschitz , a team owner took part in Formula 1 for the first time, and he was significantly involved in two teams.
After all, with Super Aguri F1, an eleventh team took part for the first time since 2002.
Before the Italian Grand Prix , the Midland F1 team was taken over by Spyker . The team already competed in China under the new name Spyker MF1 Racing and with a new paint job.
driver
In the 2006 season, numerous changes were made to the composition of the teams with racing, test and reserve drivers. The racing drivers have made the following changes compared to the 2005 season:
The two racing drivers Robert Doornbos and Patrick Friesacher , who were employed by Minardi in 2005, and the former Jordan driver Narain Karthikeyan were no longer in the starting field. Doornbos was Red Bull's third driver in 2006 while Karthikeyan was a test driver for Williams.
New to Formula 1 were drivers Nico Rosberg and Scott Speed , who competed in the GP2 series last season . Rosberg replaced Nick Heidfeld at Williams . Speed strengthened the new Toro Rosso team. As the new Formula 1 driver and the Japanese launched Yuji Ide with the team Super Aguri F1 , of the Formula Nippon changed. Ide was only allowed to drive four races because he was noticed by unsporting driving behavior and his license was withdrawn by the FIA . It was approved by the European Grand Prix to the GP of France by the French and former Renault -Testfahrer Franck Montagny replaced as a regular driver, in turn, from the GP of Germany by the Japanese Sakon Yamamoto was replaced.
Nick Heidfeld switched from Williams to the BMW Sauber team and replaced Felipe Massa there . Massa switched to Ferrari in place of Rubens Barrichello . Barrichello replaced Takuma Satō at Honda , while Sato joined the Super Aguri team this season. Christijan Albers also moved from Minardi to MF1 Racing and Vitantonio Liuzzi went from Red Bull to the “Red Bull Junior Team” Scuderia Toro Rosso.
As of the Hungarian GP , BMW Sauber Friday tester Robert Kubica took over the cockpit from Jacques Villeneuve . The new test driver for the free practice sessions on Friday at BMW Sauber was the young German Sebastian Vettel . On September 11, 2006 it was announced that the Austrian Christian Klien had been prematurely released from his contract with Red Bull Racing , which ran until the end of the season . His place was taken by the third man on the Robert Doornbos team.
Teams and drivers
1 The first four teams of the previous season were not allowed to use a third driver in the Friday practice sessions.
2 The team started from the 15th race (Italian Grand Prix) under the name of the new majority owner Spyker.

The Bahrain Grand Prix at the Bahrain International Circuit took place on March 12, 2006 and covered a distance of 57 laps of 5.417 km each, for a total of 308.238 km.
The day before, Michael Schumacher in the Ferrari reached pole position with a time of 1: 31.431 in front of his teammate Felipe Massa . He drew level with the Brazilian Ayrton Senna , who also achieved 65 pole positions. The start of the race went smoothly except for a spin by Nick Heidfeld , who was kicked off by Nico Rosberg .
The refueling strategy was decisive for the course of the race. Kimi Räikkönen was able to achieve third place with his one-stop strategy despite being last on the grid. Schumacher and Alonso were both on the road with a two-stop strategy. At the last stop, Fernando Alonso narrowly secured first place ahead of Schumacher. Rosberg set the fastest race lap with 1: 32.408 minutes on his 42nd lap shortly before his second refueling stop.
Of the 22 rides that started, 18 reached the finish. Only Ide, Villeneuve, Fisichella and Albers were eliminated in the course of the race.

The Malaysian Grand Prix at the Sepang International Circuit took place on March 19, 2006 and covered a distance of 56 laps of 5.543 km, for a total of 310.408 km.
The race weekend began with significant engine problems: both Ferrari drivers Michael Schumacher and Felipe Massa, as well as Toyota driver Ralf Schumacher, as well as Red Bull driver David Coulthard and Honda's Rubens Barrichello had to change the engine in their cars, what for each of them meant a deterioration in the starting position by ten places.
The fastest in qualifying was Giancarlo Fisichella in a Renault. In the race he was able to convert his pole position into a victory. The start went particularly well for Alonso, who improved from 7th on the grid to 3rd.
The first lap was unhappy for Raikkonen and Klien: the two collided, Raikkönen had to end the race immediately, Klien followed with a defect on lap 26. Another six drivers also dropped out: Rosberg, Coulthard, Webber, Ide, Speed and Heidfeld. The fastest race lap was set by Alonso with a time of 1: 34.803 minutes.

The Australian Grand Prix at the Albert Park Circuit in Melbourne took place on April 2, 2006 and covered a distance of 58 laps of 5.303 km, for a total of 307.574 km.
The race only started after a new warm-up lap because Giancarlo Fisichella stopped at the start. Jenson Button initially defended his pole position, but lost the lead to Fernando Alonso during the first lap. The race was marked by numerous accidents (Felipe Massa, Michael Schumacher, Juan-Pablo Montoya and others) and the resulting safety car phases.
After each restart, Alonso was always able to pull himself away from his pursuers and achieved a safe victory ahead of Kimi Räikkönen. Ralf Schumacher drove to 3rd place despite a penalty (too fast in the pits).
Jenson Button, who could never keep up with Alonso and Raikkonen, suffered an engine failure in the last corner, but stopped his Honda shortly before the finish line. Button remained without World Championship points, but with this stance could save himself a downgrade by 10 places (because of the necessary engine change) at the next race in Imola. Originally in 8th place, Scott Speed received a time penalty for overtaking David Coulthard under a yellow flag and was only ninth.
Kimi Raikkonen set the fastest race lap on the penultimate lap with 1: 26.045 minutes.

Michael Schumacher took pole position in a Ferrari with a time of 1: 22.795 minutes. It was his 66th pole position ever and a new record (the old record holder was Ayrton Senna ). Jenson Button and Rubens Barrichello in a Honda followed on the other places .
At the start, Michael Schumacher was able to keep his leading position in front of Button. Fernando Alonso was able to win a place starting from 5th place. Just a few corners later, the last-placed Yūji Ide collided in the Super Aguri with Christijan Albers , who was driving in front of him . The Dutchman overturned six times, but was able to get out of the wreck that had landed on his head unharmed. After the safety car phase that followed, Schumacher drove ahead and was able to build a comfortable lead up to his stop. On lap 30, when Jenson Button made his first stop, the lollipop man raised his sign too early, giving the driver the signal to drive off. Button grabbed half of his crew of mechanics and the fuel hose. There were no injuries in this incident.
After the first pit stops, Schumacher was back in front, ahead of his team-mate Felipe Massa and the reigning world champion Fernando Alonso. After Massa's second stop, who had meanwhile kept Alonso in check, Schumacher suddenly slowed 1.5 seconds per lap and had great problems keeping Alonso behind him until his second stop. Surprisingly, the Spaniard pitted first, Schumacher came a lap later and kept the lead. Both fought a fight until the end of the race, which Schumacher was able to win in the end. Schumacher took his 85th victory, Ferrari his 183.
David Coulthard , Takuma Satō , Christian Klien , Yūji Ide , Jarno Trulli and Christijan Albers did not reach the goal. Alonso drove the fastest race lap (1: 24.569 minutes).

The Hungarian Grand Prix at the Hungaroring near Budapest took place on August 6, 2006 and covered a distance of 70 laps of 4.381 km, for a total of 306.663 km.
Both Fernando Alonso and Michael Schumacher drove in qualifying with the handicap that two seconds were added to each of their qualifying times. Alonso received a penalty of one second each for a dangerous situation he was responsible for when meeting Doornbos and for overtaking under the yellow flag. Schumacher received his penalty for overtaking under the red flag. As a result, Schumacher was only able to qualify for starting position 11 and Alonso for starting position 15.
After the start, Kimi Raikkonen took the lead. Starting from 15th place, Alonso fought his way to the top on a mostly wet track and after a furious race to catch up. After his second pit stop, however, he got off the track due to two lost wheel bolts and had to give up. Kimi Raikkonen collided with Liuzzi while lapping.
In the last third of the race, Jenson Button, who also started far behind, was ahead of Michael Schumacher. While the following de la Rosa, Heidfeld and Barrichello caught up more and more, Schumacher tried to get to the finish with his wacky set of tires. However, he retired with a defective suspension three laps to go. Since he had already covered 75% of the race distance, he was classified in ninth place. After Kubica's disqualification (the Pole's car weighed two kilograms too light after the race), Schumacher even moved up to eighth place, which earned the German one World Championship point.

When Fernando Alonso, who had been leading the race until then, was slowing down due to falling tires, he was overtaken by Fisichella and Schumacher. Schumacher then also passed Fisichella in a spectacular maneuver, who was just leaving the pits and still got too little grip. When Alonso lost a lot of time on his second pit stop, Schumacher's victory seemed safe. But shortly before the end of the race it started to rain again and Alonso was able to reduce his gap from 13 seconds to just three seconds.
