Alexandre Prémat (born April 5, 1982 in Juvisy-sur-Orge , France ) is a French racing driver . He was active in the GP2 series from 2005 to 2006 and won three races in that series. In 2006 he won the A1 Grand Prix championship with the French team and Nicolas Lapierre . In 2008 he was champion of the Le Mans Series together with Mike Rockenfeller . From 2007 to 2010 he competed in the DTM for Team Phoenix . The Frenchman has been competing in the V8 Supercars since 2012 .

Career

Prémat began his motorsport career in 1992 at the age of ten in karting , in which he was active until 2000. He also made his debut in formula racing in 2000 and immediately became runner-up in the French Formula Renault Campus . In 2001, the racing driver competed in the French Formula Renault and finished his first season in ninth place. In 2002 Prémat stayed in the French Formula Renault and started for ASM . He won three races and won the championship ahead of Eric Salignon . He also took part in four races of the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup and finished tenth.

In 2003 he switched to the newly founded Formula 3 Euro Series , in which he also competed for ASM. Prémat won a race and finished seventh in the championship. In 2004 the Frenchman played his second season in the Formula 3 Euro Series for ASM. He won three races and at the end of the season only had to admit defeat to his teammate Jamie Green and became runner-up. He also won the prestigious Formula 3 races in Zandvoort and Macau .

In 2005 Prémat switched to the new GP2 series and competed for ART Grand Prix , ASM's GP2 team. While the French won two races and finished fourth in the overall standings, his team-mate Nico Rosberg won the championship title in the GP2 series. He then competed in the A1 Grand Prix for the French team in the 2005/2006 season . He shared the cockpit with Nicolas Lapierre and contested 11 of 22 races. Prémat won seven races and was the driver with the most wins. At the end of the season, Lapierre and Prémat won the championship title for the French team. In 2006 the racing driver returned to the GP2 series and stayed at ART Grand Prix again. Lewis Hamilton became his new teammate. Prémat was inferior to Hamilton from the start and ended the season with a win in third place. Hamilton became a champion. At the end of the season the Frenchman left the ART Grand Prix. He also took part in a Formula 1 weekend as a Friday driver in the 2006 season and drove for the Spyker MF1 team in training for the Chinese Grand Prix . He also took part in test drives in the American Champ Car series and set the fastest time on both test days.

After 2007 had found no cockpit in a formula series, he joined the touring car racing in the DTM . At Team Phoenix he received a year old Audi A4 DTM and became a team mate of Christian Abt . The Frenchman was involved in a serious accident in the first race at the Hockenheimring . He collided with Tom Kristensen's out-of-control Audi at high speed and tore his lumbar vertebrae . Then he had to pause a race. After his return he was able to score points in a few races and was second on the podium for the first time in Zandvoort, where he led the race and only let the victorious Martin Tomczyk pass on the home straight because of a suspected stall order . He finished the season ahead of his team-mate Abt in eleventh place in the drivers' standings. He also made his debut for Audi Sport Team Joest at the Le Mans 24-hour race . His team didn't reach the goal.

In 2008 he stayed with Team Phoenix and got a new team-mate in Oliver Jarvis . At his home race in Le Mans , he achieved another podium finish in third place. In the overall standings, he prevailed over Jarvis and finished tenth overall. He also started again in the 24 Hours of Le Mans and finished fourth. In addition, he took for Joest Racing at the 2008 season of the Le Mans Series and won with Mike Rockenfeller the champion of the LMP1 class.

Prémat in the 2010 DTM

In 2009 Prémat lost the team-internal duel against Jarvis in the DTM and finished 13th in the championship with fourth place as the best result. At the 24-hour race at Le Mans he crossed the finish line in 17th place. In 2010 Prémat completed his fourth season in the DTM for Team Phoenix. After Jarvis left the team, Rockenfeller became his new teammate. At the second race in Valencia , the Frenchman finished third again on the podium. Prémat also made headlines this season with a serious accident on the Adria International Raceway . After contact with Maro Engel , he hit the track barrier and rolled over four times. He was able to leave the car, which had been destroyed except for the driver's cell, without assistance. Except for severe bruises and a concussion, he was uninjured. For the last race weekend he was replaced by Darryl O'Young . After a number of incidents, the team decided to split up early. At the end of the season he finished eleventh overall.

In 2011, after a year of absence, he contested the 24 Hours of Le Mans and three other races in the Intercontinental Le Mans Cup for OAK Racing .

In 2012 Prémat switched to the Australian V8 Supercars Championship, which he competed for Garry Rogers Motorsport. In 2013 he also drove for the team in the championship.

Since 2014, Prémat has been returning to the Australian Supercars Championship every year as an additional driver (co-driver) for the 4-race Enduro Cup. He won the Enduro Cup in 2016 together with Shane van Gisbergen. He was also active in the Blancpain Endurance Series.

Personal

Prémat has lived in Ermatingen in the Swiss canton of Thurgau since 2009 .
