Special events

Opening race at the Hockenheimring

At the start of the season at the Hockenheimring, one of the most momentous accidents in DTM history occurred on the first lap. Tom Kristensen spun in the third corner after running into Timo Scheider. Due to the heavy smoke development caused by this, the view of the route was obstructed, so that Alexandre Prémat and Susie Stoddart drove one after the other in Kristensen's car. Stoddart was uninjured, but the doctors found Alexandre Prémat to be torn in the lumbar vertebrae and Tom Kristensen suffered whiplash . Both drivers had to pause in the second race. Prémat was replaced by Marco Werner, Kristensen by Frank Biela. While Prémat was able to start again in the third race, Kristensen paused two more races and was replaced by Markus Winkelhock.

EuroSpeedway Lausitz

On the EuroSpeedway on May 20, 2007, the safety car missed the lead car and led the field of participants around the course in a “wrong order” for several laps. In addition, a new regulation on safety car phases that has been in force since the beginning of the season, during which pit stops are only permitted to a limited extent, led to additional confusion. In the end, the field was mixed up in such a way that after the restart the safety car had to go out again to restore the correct order. On May 22, 2007 the DMSB decided that due to the incidents only half the points would be awarded for the race. In addition, the weight gain and loss provided for in the DTM regulations for the next race was reduced from 7 to 3.5 kg.

It should be noted that in Formula 1, the first safety car phase with these changes led to similar chaos and even disqualifications of two drivers.

Barcelona

Before this race Mercedes had only one realistic championship candidate, Bruno Spengler , who was also ten points behind championship leader Mattias Ekström in the Audi and six on his team-mate Martin Tomczyk .

Tomczyk started the race from pole, Spengler from position 3 and Ekström only from position 10, but was already fifth after a few laps, which would have been enough for the championship. Now there was a collision between Tomczyk and the former Formula 1 world champion Mika Häkkinen in the Mercedes, which meant the end for both drivers. The race management had subsequently disqualified Häkkinen for this (de facto without consequences, since he himself retired) and moved ten places down for the starting grid for the next race.

In addition, there was a collision between the far behind Mercedes driver Daniel la Rosa and Ekström, which also meant the end for both of them. The blame for this incident is attributed to him by all those involved except la Rosa himself, so that he too was moved ten places down for the coming race. The championship decision was definitely postponed.

In the further course of the race there were further collisions between Timo Scheider (Audi) and Mathias Lauda (Mercedes) and between Spengler and Mike Rockenfeller (Audi), in which the Audi drivers were the ones who suffered. After that, the Audi still in the race from Rockenfeller, Lucas Luhr , Markus Winkelhock , Tom Kristensen and Vanina Ickx were taken out of the race by the factory in order to “prevent any of the drivers from doing something we all don't want,” said Audi - Sports director Wolfgang Ulrich. The race, which only six drivers could finish, was won by Jamie Green ahead of Spengler and Paul di Resta .

This meant that three drivers still had championship chances for the final race that was still outstanding. Ex-champion Bernd Schneider lost his chances due to a retirement due to technical problems, di Resta - who as a rookie would have had theoretical chances with a two-year-old car - should have won the race, which would have been possible thanks to the result from the stable order .
