2016 season>

The 2015 DTM season was the 29th season of the DTM and the 16th since the series was re-established in 2000. The season began on May 2 in Hockenheim and ended on October 18 at the same point. The season was very balanced. The 18 races were won by 13 different drivers and only the top three in the championship won more than one race.

Sporting and technical changes

Manufacturer

For the 2015 season, Mercedes renamed the vehicles previously used under the name DTM AMG Mercedes C-Coupé to Mercedes-AMG C63 DTM .

Teams

Mercedes increased its line-up from seven to eight vehicles. In the course of this, the ART Grand Prix team entered the DTM, HWA reduced the number of vehicles from five to four.

Regulations

In the 2015 season, two races were held on each race weekend, one on Saturday and one on Sunday. Between 1988 and 2000 there had already been two races on a race weekend, but both on Sunday. As the number of race weekends decreased from ten to nine, the number of races increased from ten to 18.

The race on Saturday lasted 40 minutes, the race on Sunday 60 minutes. There was only a mandatory pit stop in the Sunday race. A qualifying session lasting 20 minutes was carried out before both races. Although the two races were of different lengths, the same number of points were awarded.

The drivers were allowed to use the DRS a maximum of three times instead of once in one lap this season. The position on the racetrack was left up to the drivers ; there were no fixed DRS zones, as in the Formula 1 World Championship . In addition, the distance to the vehicle in front was only allowed to be a maximum of one second, previously it was two seconds.

There were only four sets of tires available per vehicle for both qualifying sessions and the two races. Since two sets of tires had to be used in the second race, one set of tires had to be used twice.

Similar to Formula 1, there was now a curfew in the DTM , the mechanics were not allowed to work for eleven hours straight from Saturday to Sunday. However, once a season each driver was allowed to use a joker , in which case the mechanics were allowed to ignore the curfew.

For cost reasons, only one engine was allowed per driver for the entire season, but each manufacturer had only one replacement engine for all drivers instead of two.

As of the 2015 season, drivers kept their starting numbers for several seasons, similar to those in Formula 1 since 2014. The drivers were free to choose the numbers from 2 to 99. The number 1 was reserved for the reigning master.

Teams and drivers

All teams used Hankook tires .

  • At the second Spielberg race, Scheider was disqualified for causing a collision. Scheider was first overtaken by Pascal Wehrlein after he had followed Wehrlein's slower-moving brand colleague Robert Wickens . Before the next bend, Scheider braked later than Wickens and pushed Wickens into Wehrlein. Both drivers retired, while Scheider crossed the finish line in sixth. The race stewards saw Scheider to be responsible for this incident and disqualified him. Shortly before the incident, Audi Motorsport Director Wolfgang Ullrich could be heard over Scheider's pit radio , who radioed the instruction "Timo, push him out". Scheider was also suspended for two races. Wolfgang Ulrich was prohibited from entering the pit lane and using the team radio for the remainder of the season and Audi was fined 200,000 euros.
