Maxime Martin (born March 20, 1986 in Uccle / Ukkel ) is a Belgian racing driver . He drove in the FIA GT1 World Championship from 2010 to 2012 . He started in the DTM between 2014 and 2017 .
Career
Maxime Martin, the son of Jean-Michel Martin and nephew of Philippe Martin , began his motorsport career in touring car racing in 2004 . He started in the Belgian Mini Cooper Challenge for two years and in his second season reached third place overall. 2006 Martin practiced for a season -seater racing and was fourth in the Belgian Formula Renault 1.6. In 2007 he switched to touring car / GT racing . His main focus was on the Renault Mégane Eurocup , in which he was third in the championship with a victory. In addition, he competed in individual races in the THP Spider Cup and in the GT4 European Cup and took part in formula racing in two French Formula Renault races. In 2008 Martin stayed in the Renault Mégane Eurocup. With six wins out of fourteen races, he won most of the races, but in the championship he had to admit defeat to Michaël Rossi . In addition, Martin won the French Renault Clio Cup . He also took part in a race in the FIA GT Championship and three races in the FIA GT3 European Championship .
In 2009, Martin's main focus was on the FIA GT3 European Championship. He won a race and was tenth in the drivers' championship. In addition, he competed in several other championships in individual races and achieved three victories in the GT4 European Cup as well as victory in the G3 classification at the 24-hour race of Spa-Francorchamps . In the ADAC GT Masters he scored two victories in two guest starts. In 2010 Martin switched to the newly founded FIA GT1 World Championship for the Marc VDS Racing Team , where he and Bas Leinders drove a Ford GT1 . The two finished two qualifying races in third place and finished 14th in the championship. He also contested three race weekends for Marc VDS Racing Team in the FIA GT3 European Championship. Martin also took part in the French GT championship.
In 2011 Martin stayed with the Marc VDS Racing Team in the FIA GT1 World Championship. With four wins (three qualification races, one championship race) he reached sixth place in the championship. Frédéric Makowiecki was his team-mate for the victories . Martin also competed in the 2011 FIA GT3 European Championship and the Blancpain Endurance Series . In the FIA GT3 European Championship he and Gaël Lesoudier finished seventh in the drivers' championship with an Aston Martin DBRS9 from the LMP Motorsport team . In the Blancpain Endurance Series he won two races with Bas Leinders and finished the season with his teammate in fifth place. In addition, Martin made his debut at the Le Mans 24-hour race in 2011 . For Kronos Racing he drove a Lola-Aston Martin LMP1 together with Vanina Ickx and Leinders . The three racing drivers finished seventh overall. Martin also took part in some Belcar races.
In 2012 Martin started on three race weekends in the FIA GT1 World Championship for Valmon Racing Team Russia, which was managed by LMP Motorsport , before they withdrew from the championship. Martin reached the 28th place overall with a ninth place as the best result. In addition, Martin competed in a BMW Alpina B6 GT3 together with Dino Lunardi in the 2012 ADAC GT Masters season . With three wins, the two achieved fourth place in the drivers' championship. He also shared a BMW Z4 GT3 from the Marc VDS Racing Team with Bas Leinders and Markus Palttala in the 2012 Blancpain Endurance Series . The three won two races and finished second in the GT3 Pro Cup classification. The trio also finished fourth overall in the Marc VDS Racing BMW Z4 GT3 in the 24-hour races at the Nürburgring and in Spa-Francorchamps. During 2012 24 Hours of Le Mans Martin was once again at the start. He made his debut as part of this in the newly founded FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC), in which he reached 81st place in the drivers' world championship.
In 2013, Martin completed sports car races in North America and Europe. In the American Le Mans Series (ALMS), he started nine out of ten races for Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing in the GT class and finished sixth overall with one win. In the Rolex Sports Car Series , he was once on the podium in the GT class in two participations. In Europe, Martin started for the Marc VDS Racing Team in the Blancpain Endurance Series in 2013 . Together with his teammates Yelmer Buurman and Leinders, he won a race in the GT3 Pro Cup and achieved third place overall in this classification. In 2013 Martin drove GT sprint races in the FIA GT Series, where he took part in the last two races for the Marc VDS Racing Team. In the 24-hour race at the Nürburgring in 2013, he finished second for the Marc VDS Racing Team in the BMW Z4 GT3 with Buurman, Richard Göransson and Andrea Piccini . Martin made a significant contribution to the success of his team by catching up on the leaders by 20 seconds per lap in the last stint and moving the car from fourth to second. Especially on wet track conditions he stood out for his outstanding performance. In addition, Martin was a DTM test driver at BMW in 2013.
In 2014 , Martin received a DTM cockpit in the BMW M4 DTM from Reinhold Motorsport . He won his first DTM race in Wolokolamsk . While his team-mate Marco Wittmann won the racing series, he finished his debut season in seventh place overall. In 2014 Martin also drove one race each in the Blancpain Endurance Series and the United SportsCar Championship (USCC). In 2015 Martin stayed with Reinhold Motorsport in the DTM and chose 36 as his starting number. He won a race at the Nürburgring. With two further podium finishes, he again achieved seventh place in the drivers' championship. He also contested two races each in the Blancpain Sprint Series and the Blancpain Endurance Series.
In 2016 , Martin switched to Racing Bart Mampaey within the BMW DTM teams . He came third twice. He finished the season in eighth place overall. In addition, Martin won the Spa-Francorchamps 24-hour race for BMW Team Rowe Racing as part of the Blancpain Endurance Series . His teammates in the win were Philipp Eng and Alexander Sims . In the 2017 DTM season , he remained a driver for Racing Bart Mampaey. With a race win, he was again eighth in the overall standings. On December 14, 2017, it was announced that Martin would be leaving BMW and thus also the DTM for the new season in order to concentrate on a new challenge from 2018.
