Lettering of the second Clio

The Renault Clio , named after the muse of history in Greek mythology, is a small car produced by the French automobile manufacturer Renault since 1990, available in three- and five-door versions. A station wagon has also been offered since the beginning of 2008. The fifth generation has been available since September 2019. As of July 2019, around 15 million Clio had been produced so far.

development

The first Clio replaced the second generation of the Renault 5 in mid-1990 .

The notchback version of the Clio, available since mid-1999, is called Renault Thalia or (up to the second generation ) Renault Clio Symbol and is particularly popular in Eastern Europe.

In Mexico, the third generation was also called Renault Euro Clio . The older version was accordingly renamed Renault Clio Classic in Asia and will continue to be produced in parallel to the current generation. The second generation was also assembled as Renault Clio Grande or Renault Clio Storia .

At the end of the first and second generation, there was still the Renault Clio Campus designed as an inexpensive special model .

In Asia, South and Central America, the model generation from the 2010s is also offered as the Nissan Platina . The symbol, on the other hand, has now developed into an independent model.

The term “phase” in Renault models refers to the respective facelifts of the corresponding model series. For example, the Phase II Clio II is a second generation model with the first facelift.

The Clio IV from 2012 was the first vehicle with which Renault's new chief designer, Laurens van den Acker , converted his new design line, which was given with the Renault DeZir, into a production vehicle.

At the end of March 2020 it was announced that the small car had climbed to the top of new registrations. The best-selling car up to that point was the VW Golf . However, in the wake of the corona pandemic and the stop of VW production, the top position was lost. In February, the European authorities counted 24,914 registrations of the Renault Clio. The Golf has to say goodbye to its previous top position with 24,735 new registrations.

Sidelines

The mini SUV Captur has been produced on the technical basis of the Clio since 2013 . Likewise, the Dacia Sandero of the first generation (2008) and the Dacia Sandero of the second generation (2012) are based on the Clio (the former on the Clio III, the latter on the Clio IV). Since 2013, the Dacia Logan II MCV has been based on the second generation Sandero and thus indirectly on the Clio IV.
