The first generation of the Altima, initially officially called the Nissan Stanza Altima, was a four-door, 4.60-meter-long front-wheel drive sedan that was technically related to the Nissan Bluebird U13, but had its very own body drawn in Nissan's Californian design studio. The Altima was powered by a 2.4-liter in-line four-cylinder, which produced 112 kW / 152 hp and transmitted its power via a five-speed manual gearbox or a four-speed automatic transmission. The equipment levels were named XE, GXE, SE and GLE.

It was powered by a 2.5-liter inline four-cylinder (130 kW / 177 hp) or a 3.5-liter V6 that developed 149 kW / 243 hp, and later up to 194 kW / 264 hp. A facelift followed for the 2005 model year and manual and automatic transmissions now had 6 or 5 gears.

The fourth Altima appeared on a new platform for the 2006 model year. The four- and six-cylinder engines were taken over from the predecessor, but the V6 now developed 201 kW / 273 hp. A six-speed manual transmission was standard, and a continuously variable CVT automatic was used instead of the traditional automatic.
Since 2006 the Altima has also been offered as a hybrid vehicle with the four-cylinder engine, an electric motor (40hp) and the continuously variable automatic. In the US it was only sold in certain states: California, New York, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Vermont, Oregon, Rhode Island, Maine and New Jersey.
In May 2007, production of the Altima Coupé began on a shortened wheelbase (2675 instead of 2776 mm) with sedan technology.

The fifth Altima appeared for the 2013 model year in summer 2012. Like the Camry , it is available with the four-cylinder engine and the V6 as the top-of-the-range engine. The 2.5 l 16V DOHC four-cylinder base engine now delivers 136 kW (185 hp) and a torque of 244 Nm. The 3.5 l 24 V DOHC six-cylinder engine remained at 201 kW (273 hp) and 350 Nm. Most of the mechanical components were carried over from the fourth generation of Altima. The styling is reminiscent of the Maxima .
Despite the larger dimensions, the new Altima weighs around 55 kg less. This means that it remains the lightest sedan in its class, which is mainly due to the use of aluminum and high-strength steel in the areas of the trunk, the bonnet and the roof. Up front, the car features the same new grill as the 2012 Versa, but with more rectangular headlights. From behind it is more reminiscent of the maxima.
Nissan offers the Altima in seven trim levels: 2.5, 2.5 S, 2.5 SV, 2.5 SL, 3.5 S, 3.5 SV and 3.5 SL. With the new L33 sedan, the coupé will also continue to be offered later, even if only with the 2.5-liter engine. The manual six-speed gearbox is no longer available for the sedan, as this model did not sell well. The SL, previously an equipment package for the 2.5 S, is now a separate equipment variant.
Production of the new model began in May 2012; From June the cars could be ordered in the USA and from August in Canada. The new Altima is also being offered in other new and old markets - especially in the Middle East - including Australia for the first time.
In some markets, such as the Japanese or Russian, the vehicle is sold as the Nissan Teana .

The sixth generation of the Altima was presented at the New York International Auto Show in April 2018 . The vehicle has been built in Smyrna (Tennessee) since August 24, 2018 and in Canton (Mississippi) since September 27, 2018 . The sedan has been sold in North America and China since autumn 2018.
In North America, the Altima is powered by a 2.5-liter gasoline engine with 140 kW (190 hp) or a 2.0-liter gasoline engine with 185 kW (252 hp). The latter has variable compression that varies between 8: 1 and 14: 1. The cylinder stroke also changes by up to six millimeters, which means that the displacement changes between 1970 and 1997 cm³. This engine debuted in the second generation Infiniti QX50 in 2017 . In China, a further 2.0-liter gasoline engine with 117 kW (159 hp) is available instead of the 2.5-liter gasoline engine.
