The Nissan Sunny GTI-R (also called Nissan Pulsar GTI-R depending on the sales market ) is a sporty compact class model with all-wheel drive from the Japanese car manufacturer Nissan . It is based on the three-door variant of the Nissan Sunny / Pulsar of the N14 series.

The GTI-R was to homologation for the former World Rally Championship Group A built. Prominent representatives of this era included the Lancia Delta Integrale and the Toyota Celica Turbo 4WD .

variants

The Nissan Sunny GTI-R (internal EGNN14) is the European variant of the Japanese Nissan Pulsar GTI-R (RNN14). Both versions differ in equipment and performance. The Sunny GTI-R was available as a left- and right-hand drive version for Europe (including UK ), while the Pulsar GTI-R was only available as a right-hand drive version.

Differences to the "normal" Sunny (GTI) are a larger rear spoiler, a bonnet with several air inlets (for cooling and for the intercooler), front bumper with larger cooling openings and 3 additional instruments (oil temperature / oil pressure / boost pressure) in the center console .

engine

The Nissan Sunny GTI-R is powered by the Nissan SR20DET, this engine is also used in a similar form in the Nissan 200SX . A Garrett GT28 turbocharger charges the 2.0 liter engine with 0.73 bar. In addition, a single throttle valve system is installed as well as a charge air cooler (so-called TMIC = Top Mounted Intercooler) mounted above the engine . The cylinder head of the 16-valve valve is made of aluminum and has sodium-filled exhaust valves for better heat dissipation.

The aluminum engine block is a so-called 54C block, a reinforced variant of the SR20DET, with u. a. larger oil and cooling water channels. This was also used in the British Touring Car Championship in the Nissan Primera .

Technical specifications:

  • Otto inline four-cylinder with turbocharger
  • DOHC 16 valves
  • Displacement: 1998 cm³
  • Bore × stroke [mm]: 86 × 86
  • Compression: 8.3: 1
  • Fuel: gasoline 95 octane
  • Output: 220 hp at 6400 rpm
  • Torque: 267 Nm at 4800 rpm

The Japanese version of the right-hand drive Pulsar GTI-R (RNN14) makes 230 hp and 280 Nm due to its higher octane rating in Japan.

transmission

Power is transmitted via a five-speed manual transmission and permanent all-wheel drive. The core of the system is the central differential gear and a separate rear axle differential , each of which is equipped with a viscous lock. The all-wheel drive is based on the ATTESA system developed by Nissan. The floor assembly of the GTI-R differs from that of the front-wheel drive Sunny due to the cardan tunnel required for four-wheel drive.

Range of the 5-speed gearbox at shift speed 7500 / min: 58/97/140/185/250 km / h

Performance

Factory information:

  • Acceleration 0-100 km / h: 6.4 s
  • Top speed: 223 km / h

The German trade magazine sport auto determined the following driving performance in a comparison test:

  • 0–60 km / h: 2.9 s
  • 0-80 km / h: 4.2 s
  • 0-100 km / h: 6.0 s
  • 0–120 km / h: 8.2 s
  • 0–140 km / h: 11.2 s
  • 0–160 km / h: 15.2 s
  • 0–180 km / h: 20.7 s
  • 0-200 km / h: 32.6 s
  • Top speed: 226 km / h
  • Small course Hockenheim: 1.22.7 min.

Due to the good acceleration, the tester noted that at least two gear changes were necessary to reach the 100 km / h mark. In the comparison test, the Lancia Delta HF Integrale 16V, Toyota Celica Turbo 4WD, Audi S2 and the Ford Sierra Cosworth were beaten in acceleration and lap times. The relatively low top speed for performance is due to the high C w value of 0.39, as rally vehicles are more about downforce than top speed.

In a test in Japan between the series GTI-R and a Nismo variant, an acceleration of 0–400 meters in 13.545 s was measured, which means that the series variant won (see web links).

price

The basic price in Germany in 1992 was an impressive 60,000 DM, three times as expensive as the basic version of the Sunny and twice as expensive as a VW Golf GTI at the time. The high price was justified by the complex technology, but can probably still be viewed as subsidized.

Numbers & stock

In order to achieve homologation for the Nissan Sunny (Pulsar) GTI-R, at least 5000 vehicles had to be produced per year. There are no exact figures, but supposedly there were 15,000 vehicles, almost all of them right-hand drive Nissan Pulsars. Presumably fewer than 1,000 left-hand drive vehicles were produced, most of them going to Germany.

For the German market there was a limited edition of only 600 pieces.

The stock of the Nissan Sunny GTI-R (TSN 7105/484) in Germany as of January 1, 2016 is only 17 vehicles.

Rally sport

GTI-R built according to Group A regulations
Group A

The success in the World Rally Championship 1991 & 1992 was low. The best result was a third place for Stig Blomqvist at the 41st Rally Sweden . That is why Nissan Motorsports Europe (NME) got out as a works team. The reasons given for the poor performance were the unfavorable location of the charge air cooler on the engine and the allegedly poorer Dunlop tires.

Groups

The team starting in this group was able to achieve first and second place in 1992, despite concerns.

Video games

The Nissan Sunny GTI-R was included in the first part of Gran Turismo and Sega GT , as well as the Pulsar GTi-R in Forza Horizon 4 .
