Helmut Kewitz

Helmut Kewitz (born July 25, 1920 in Berlin , †  October 21, 2009 in Berlin) was a German pharmacologist .

Life

As a medical student, Helmut Kewitz was one of the founders of the Free University of Berlin in 1948 . He began his professional activity as an assistant to the pharmacologist Wolfgang Heubner . His doctorate in 1950 and his habilitation in 1954 on the effects of acetylcholine on the nervous system was followed by a study visit to Columbia University in New York.

In 1962 he became a professor of veterinary pharmacology at the Free University of Berlin. In 1969 he took over the nationwide first chair for clinical pharmacology at this university. From 1978 to 1988 he was Medical Director of the Steglitz Clinic in Berlin-Steglitz . Even after his retirement , he worked to maintain the clinic, which was renamed the Benjamin Franklin University Hospital in 1994 . Among other things, he protested in January 2002 with an open letter to the Governing Mayor of Berlin , Klaus Wowereit , against plans by the Berlin Senate to close the Medical Faculty of the Free University. The Board of Trustees of the German Heart Center Berlin belonged Kewitz since its founding in 1986 until his death.
