The Benjamin Franklin University Hospital (UKBF) is a hospital of the full supply . It has been part of the Charité network since 1998 . The clinic goes back to the Steglitz Clinic of the Free University of Berlin, which opened in 1968 . This was in the Berlin district of Lichterfelde in what was then Steglitz district (since 2001: Steglitz-Zehlendorf district ).

The rescue helicopter Christoph 31 , which is regarded as the rescue helicopter with the most air rescue missions worldwide per day, has been stationed at the hospital since 1987.

history

After the Second World War, the clinic was the first large hospital complex in Europe to combine all institutes , almost all clinics and lecture halls in one building . The Steglitz Clinic was an alternative to the popular pavilion style.

The architectural firm Curtis & Davis from New Orleans who designed the hospital building. The Berlin architect Franz Mocken was involved.

After the fall of the Berlin Wall and the gradual merging of structures in Berlin, the Steglitz Clinic was renamed the Benjamin Franklin University Clinic in 1994 in honor of the American statesman Benjamin Franklin (1706–1790). The name change pays tribute to the American financial commitment to the construction of the hospital, namely the Benjamin Franklin Foundation .

In 2003 the UKBF merged with the Charité . In the 21st century it belongs to the Benjamin Franklin (CBF) campus .

Ten sub-areas

The clinics, centers and work areas on Campus Benjamin Franklin include (as of early 2020):

Berlin protons

BerlinProtonen , the center for proton therapy for eye tumors at the Charité, is one of the special facilities on Campus Benjamin Franklin . The proton irradiation is carried out in cooperation with the Helmholtz Center Berlin at the proton accelerator there in Berlin-Wannsee . BerlinProtonen is affiliated with the Charité Comprehensive Cancer Center (CCCC).

architecture

The rectangular floor plan is laid out in an east-west direction, on the northern broad side is the north entrance from Klingsorstrasse , on the narrow side there is the west entrance from Hindenburgdamm .

The other parts of the clinic are arranged across the ground floor area, which protrude on both sides over the floor plan and, according to the architects' intention, are reminiscent of the human spine in their structure . This so-called screen in combination with the simple facade is also the main reason why the Benjamin Franklin University Hospital was listed as a historical monument in 2012 .

There are still several lecture halls of the Medical Faculty of the Free University of Berlin directly in the main building.
